Career

college

Cam Newton was born in Atlanta in 1989 and played a total of six games as quarterback for the Florida Gators , the college football team at the University of Florida , in 2007 and 2008 . Due to an injury, he came in the 2008 season, which ended for the Florida Gators with winning the national championship, but only in the opening game for use. After he was suspended indefinitely due to the theft of a notebook , he moved to the smaller Blinn College in the Texan city of Brenham in early 2009 , with whose football team he won the national championship of the National Junior College Athletic Association that same year .

In September 2010 he moved to Auburn University and played for their Auburn Tigers football team again in the Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA. With him, the team remained undefeated this season and won the title of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In addition, the Tigers won the BCS National Championship Game on January 10, 2011 against the Oregon Ducks of the University of Oregon , the national college championship. For his achievements during this season he received, among other things, the Heisman Trophy , the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award for best college football player and the Davey O'Brien Award and the Manning Award for best quarterback in college football. He was the third Heisman winner in the history of Auburn University after Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson . In addition, he was voted All-American by several sports newsrooms .

However, due to allegations that his father, Cecil, demanded illegal cash payments in exchange for his son's commitment to the Mississippi State Bulldogs during discussions with representatives from Mississippi State University , there was ongoing controversy over Cam Newton's eligibility to play, and thus his legality Awards and his sporting successes.

Newton's major in college was sociology . He made up the fourth year of his university education in 2014 and graduated in 2015.

NFL

2011: The number 1

In the 2011 NFL Draft , Newton was selected in late April as the first player by the Carolina Panthers , with whom he signed a four-year contract on June 29, 2011. His shirt number 2, which was still worn in college, Newton had to change because in Carolina Jimmy Clausen , who was signed as quarterback in last year's draft, did not want to give up the 2. Newton chose the number 1. Before the start of the 2011 season , head coach Mike Shula Newton was appointed starting quarterback ahead of Clausen and Derek Anderson .

Newton 2011

Newton immediately became a top performer in Carolina. On his debut on September 11, 2011, the Panthers lost 21:28 at the Arizona Cardinals , but Newton got two touchdown passes and one run-down touchdown. He also recorded a pass and run touchdown the following week in the 23:30 defeat by the Green Bay Packers . Newton celebrated his first professional win on matchday three when he led the Panthers to a 16:10 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars . Newton's rookie season ended the Panthers with a 6:10 victory record and finished second to last in the Southern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC).

2012–2014: up and down

In the following year , the Panthers missed the play-offs despite a slightly better 7: 9 victory record . Newton showed improvements in numerous statistics compared to his first year as a professional. In the 2013 season, a further increase was also noticeable in the results: The Panthers won twelve of their 16 games of the season and reached the play-offs, even enjoying a bye in the first round and entering the Divisional Round . Surprisingly, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers at 10:23 at home . Newton was invited to the Pro Bowl for the first time after the season .

The 2014 season was marked by injuries. After Newton had an ankle ligament surgery that spring, he missed most of the preparation. In a friendly against the New England Patriots in August , he suffered a tackle with a rib injury that put him out of action for the first game of the season. When he returned from the second game, he showed some of his best appearances to date in the dress of the Panthers. The highlight was a 41:10 win over division rivals New Orleans Saints , in which he threw three touchdowns and one ran.

Two days after the Saints game, on December 9, Newton was involved in a serious car accident. At an intersection near the Bank of America Stadium , a driver took the right of way and rammed his car. When this overturned several times, Newton broke two vertebrae . However, he only missed one game as a result. Twelve days after the crash, Newton was back on the field and led the Panthers back into the play-offs with two important victories at the end of the season. After a home win in the wild card round against the Arizona Cardinals, the Panthers lost to the Seattle Seahawks 17:31 away and were eliminated.

2015–2016: Super Bowl and record

In the 2015 season , the Panthers remained undefeated until the penultimate matchday - only a 13:20 defeat at the Atlanta Falcons stopped Newton on his way to a perfect season . The winning balance of 15: 1 still meant a club record. In the play-offs, however, the Panthers could not be beaten, and after wins against the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals , Carolina reached the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos . After Super Bowl XXXVIII (2004), it was the second final for the Charlotte team , when it was just under the New England Patriots .

Newton was named Most Valuable Player (MVP), Offensive Player of the Year , All-Pro, and Pro Bowl for performance during the 2015 season . Newton was also voted the best player of the season in the annual ranking of the 100 best players, compiled by the NFL Network with a survey of players and coaches in the league.

On their way to the final, the Panthers had been so superior to their opponents that they posed for winning photos before the end of the game. Accordingly, they went into the final as favorites. However, the opponents from Denver were well prepared for Newton's strong offensive, and so it was the defense of the Broncos and especially Super Bowl MVP Von Miller who dominated the game. Newton suffered six sacks , dropped two balls, and threw an interception ; the Panthers clearly lost the game by 10:24. At the subsequent press conference, Newton was taciturn and disgruntled, which numerous critics interpreted as a lack of sportsmanship.

Four months after losing the Super Bowl, Newton and the Panthers agreed on June 2, 2016 to extend their contract to the end of the 2020 season . The new contract brought Newton 103.8 million US dollars one.

On Matchday 1 of the 2016 season , which was back against the Broncos, Newton broke Steve Young's NFL records for the most touchdowns in a quarterback (44) and most games in a quarterback with a touchdown in running and passing ( 32). In this game, Newton was rudely attacked several times by the defenders of the Broncos, but even tackles against the head of the quarterback went unpunished. Rather, isolated media criticized afterwards that Newton should not have returned to the field because of a possible concussion. In subsequent games, Newton was sometimes tackled too hard. He threw the referees publicly before that they protected him enough, and demanded a debate with the Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell . When Newton suffered a concussion in the game against the Atlanta Falcons on October 2, he was out for the rest of the game and one more game.

In the away game at the Seattle Seahawks on December 4, Newton had to sit on the bench during the Panthers' first attack series and was only allowed on the field for the second. The reason for the sanction by Head Coach Ron Rivera was a violation of the team's dress code: Newton had not worn a tie two days earlier on the flight to Seattle .

In the year after participating in the Super Bowl, the Panthers clearly missed the play-offs with their 6:10 win record.

2017–2019: Injury concerns and dismissal

At the end of March 2017, Newton had to operate on the shoulder of his right limb due to a torn rotator cuff and, as in 2014, missed part of the preparation for the season. Nevertheless, he played all 16 games in the 2017 season and led the Panthers into the play-offs with 11: 5 wins. In the first round they were defeated by division rivals New Orleans Saints with a margin of 26:31.

During a press conference in Charlotte on October 4, he was interviewed by a Charlotte Observer journalist about pass routes. Newton replied by saying that it was funny to be asked questions by women about pass routes before answering the question specifically. Because of the flippant introduction Newton found himself exposed to the charge of sexism . His personal sponsor Danone ended the collaboration the next day. In a video message, Newton apologized for the comment.

In the season 2018 started Newton and the Panthers with six wins in the first eight games. The high point of the game was on October 21, when Carolina turned a 0-17 deficit before the last quarter of the game thanks to Newton's two touchdown passes and won 21:17 with the current Super Bowl winner, the Philadelphia Eagles . It was the biggest comeback in the history of the Panthers.

In the second half of the season, however, Newton's right shoulder made itself felt again. As a result, the quarterback could hardly throw the ball far, the Panthers lost seven games in a row and even dropped out of the running for a place in the play-offs. For the last two games of the season, against the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints , Newton was no longer used. Without him, the Panthers won at least the final, but meaningless game in New Orleans and said goodbye to the season break with a 7: 9 balance.

On January 24, 2019, Newton underwent another shoulder operation.

Newton was named the most underrated quarterback in the league in a poll of 85 NFL defenders by The Athletic sports portal , published on January 22, 2019 .

In the third preparation game for the 2019 season against the New England Patriots , Newton suffered an injury to his left foot. He missed the important final training days before the start of the season two weeks later. In the second game of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the injury broke up again, and the Panthers lost this game after the opening game. Now the team doctors diagnosed a fracture of the metatarsal bone , whereby Newton confessed that he had kept this a secret from the team before the two games so that it could be used at the start of the season. As a result, he was replaced by Kyle Allen , who had represented Newton at the end of the previous season in a game, while Newton this time should be given as much time as necessary to heal the injury. With Allen as playmaker, the Panthers won four of the next five games.

On November 5th, the Panthers put Newton on the so-called Injured Reserve List . He is no longer eligible to play until the end of the 2019 regular season. He was released on March 24, 2020.

On June 28, 2020, he signed a one-year contract worth up to $ 7.5 million with the New England Patriots .

style

The signing of Newton by the Panthers in the 2011 draft sparked controversial discussions among fans. The allegations from college days haunted Newton well into his professional career. In addition, Newton had caused a stir in the run-up to the draft with the statement that he saw himself not just as a footballer, but as an entertainer and style icon. For example, he developed his own font for his entries in social media .

In fact, Newton soon attracted attention in Carolina for extravagant appearances. As a rule, he would appear conspicuously dressed at press conferences. He already wore a fox tail on his hip or gucci pants with a zebra pattern. In 2017, the Californian hat manufacturer Nick Fouquet stated that he had Newton deliver a copy of his hat every week, which he then wore to public appearances. His unusual jubilation poses also occasionally caused criticism.

On the other hand, it was Newton who made the dab popular well beyond American football as a cheer in the sports world. He also made it a tradition to give away the match ball to a child or teenager in panther fan clothing in the stadium after a touchdown. He also supports children and young people with his Cam Newton Foundation .

On the field of play, Newton is a so-called dual-threat quarterback , whose strength and unpredictability is to have both a strong limb for precise, long passes and the running skills to gain space yourself. His scored 58 running touchdowns (end season 2019) are record in the NFL with 4,806 erlaufenen yards (end season 2019) is Newton behind the long-retired Michael Vick and Randall Cunningham the number 3. A best value are the 14 run touchdowns he scored in his 2011 rookie season .
