John Daniel Matuszak (born October 25, 1950 in Oak Creek , Wisconsin , † June 17, 1989 in Hollywood , California ) was an American football player and actor .

American football
Before John Matuszak became an actor, he began a professional career in American football. He began his career in 1973 with the Houston Oilers , then played from 1974 to 1975 with the Kansas City Chiefs and until the end of his career from 1976 to 1981 with the Oakland Raiders . After winning two Super Bowls with the Raiders, he resigned in 1981. In 1978 he took part in the World's Strongest Man competition.
His professional career was overshadowed by wild parties and substance abuse, so that in retrospect he was named one of the five bad boys of the National Football League on the Sports Illustrated website in 2005 .
actor
His best-known role as an actor was Sloth in The Goonies from 1985. He played many smaller roles in series and movies, such as Ice Pirate War and The A-Team . Here he mostly played the hero's evil opponent or, as in Miami Vice , the troubled killer.
His autobiography Cruisin 'with the Tooz was published by him in 1987.
death
John Matuszak died in Hollywood in 1989 at the age of 38 of a heart attack blamed for his lifestyle and anabolic steroids abuse .
