Elisha Nelson "Eli" Manning (* 3. January 1981 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL), won the Super Bowl twice ( Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI ) and was voted Super Bowl MVP both times . Manning is the son of Archie Manning and younger brother of Peyton Manning .
college
Eli Manning played college football with the Ole Miss Rebels and led them in his senior year 2003 to a 31:28 win at the Cotton Bowl , where he was voted offensive MVP and awarded the Maxwell Award .
NFL
As part of the 2004 NFL Draft , he was the first player to be selected by the San Diego Chargers . In exchange for Philip Rivers (who was drafted as the fourth player by the Giants), the draft right in the third round this year and in the first and fifth round in the following year, he was given to the New York Giants . The Chargers selected with these additional draft rights kicker Nate Kaeding , linebacker Shawne Merriman and offensive tackle Roman Oben (in exchange with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ).
At the time of the Giants, the position of quarterback was occupied by Kurt Warner , which is why Manning was hardly given any working hours at the beginning. In the second half of the 2004 season head coach Tom Coughlin finally gave his rookie confidence, whereupon the Giants lost six of the following seven games and missed the play-offs . As a result, the trust placed in Manning paid off: In the 2005 season , Manning led his team back into the play-offs for the first time since 2002 with eleven wins and five defeats, but failed there in the first round as well as the following year .
In the 2007 season Manning and the Giants qualified as a wildcard team for the play-offs and moved into the Super Bowl after victories against the favored Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers . There the Giants were on February 3, 2008 against the previously unbeaten New England Patriots 2:42 minutes before the end of the game with 10:14 and needed 84 yards for the touchdown . In what was probably the game-deciding third attempt for five yards at his own 44-yard line, Manning escaped several sack attempts 75 seconds before the end of the game and found his wide receiver David Tyree with a 32-yard pass, which he secured spectacularly with the help of his helmet. The media then spoke of perhaps the biggest move in the history of the Super Bowl. With 58 seconds left on the clock and the now much closer end zone of the Patriots, Manning threw the decisive touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress four moves later , whereupon he won the Super Bowl XLII with the Giants and was elected Super Bowl MVP .
In 2009 Manning signed a new $ 100 million six-year contract with the New York Giants . In the 2009 and 2010 seasons he threw for the first time passes for more than 4,000 yards of space, but missed the play-offs with his team.
In the 2011 season , Manning set a career best with passes for 4,933 yards. Nevertheless, the qualification for the play-offs only succeeded in the last second through wins on the last two game days of the regular season . As outsiders, Manning and the Giants then ran to their best and moved back to the Super Bowl after victories against the Atlanta Falcons , Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers . Manning earned the nicknames "Comeback Kid" and "Magic Manning" because he repeatedly decided the games in the last quarter in favor of his team. In Super Bowl XLVI he met Tom Brady and the New England Patriots again on February 5, 2012 . Like four years before, he and his team were trailing behind in the last quarter. With 3:46 minutes left on the clock, the Giants got possession of the ball at 15:17 on their own 12-yard line and, as a result of a 38-yard pass from Manning to Mario Manningham, advanced to the center line within a very short time. A minute before the end of the game, Manning had brought his team within six yards of the Patriots' end zone. The long drive was crowned by the subsequent touchdown by Ahmad Bradshaw to the 21:17 victory. Manning then won the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl MVP award for the second time . With this second victory, Manning belongs to the circle of twelve quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl several times. In addition, along with Bart Starr , Terry Bradshaw , Joe Montana and Tom Brady, he is only the fifth player to have been repeatedly elected Super Bowl MVP.
In 2016 Manning led his team under the new head coach Ben McAdoo with a record of 11-5 after five years back into the play-offs, but in the wildcard round the Giants were eliminated by the Packers. In the 2017 season , the Giants recorded only two wins and nine losses after eleven games. Then McAdoo decided to replace Manning as starting quarterback by Geno Smith . This ended Manning's streak of 210 games as a starter in a row, the longest active series by an NFL player at the time. The Giants were heavily attacked for the decision in the media. When the following game with Smith as quarterback was lost, McAdoo was fired and Manning was promoted back to starting quarterback. The Giants finished the season on a 3-13 record.
After the second day of the 2019 season , Manning had to vacate his position as starter for Daniel Jones , whom the Giants had selected in 6th place in the 2019 NFL Draft . After the season he announced the end of his career.
Private
Eli Manning is married with three daughters and one son. He is the son of former quarterback of the New Orleans Saints , Archie Manning and younger brother of quarterback Peyton Manning . Every summer he runs the Manning Passing Academy with his father and brothers Peyton and Cooper. Their goal is to improve the offense skills of quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.
