Robert Allen "Bob" Griese (* 3. February 1945 in Evansville , Indiana ) is a former American American football poker players. He played quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL).

Youth / college

Griese played from 1964 to 1966 quarterback at Purdue University with the Purdue Boilermakers . Last year, his team in the Rose Bowl beat the University of California team 14:13.

Professional time

In the AFL / NFL Draft 1967 Griese was committed in the first round in 4th place by the Dolphins. Griese's statistics for the first four years were mixed. Although he showed great talent, at the same time he only managed to get more touchdowns than interceptions in one year. In 1970 Don Shula took over the position of head coach at the Dolphins. With Griese and Shula, the Dolphins developed into one of the leading football teams of the 70s, although Griese was handicapped by a visual defect. In the second season Shula was able to lead the team to the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl VI , the Dolphins lost 24: 3 against Tom Landry's team , the Dallas Cowboys . 1972 was the big year of the Dolphins. They lost none of their games this season and also won Super Bowl VII against the Washington Redskins 14-7 . Griese scored a touchdown pass to Howard Twilley . Thus, the Dolphins managed a perfect season for the first and so far last time . A year later, the Miami team was in Super Bowl VIII and won against the Minnesota Vikings team with their star quarterback Fran Tarkenton 24: 7.

Griese succeeded after the commitment of Don Shula from 1971 to complete each of the seasons with a positive result, more games were won than lost. Griese was considered a selfless gambler. Although he could have broken the record for touchdown passes scored in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals (he had scored six touchdowns by the third quarter and needed seven), he was substituted. In 1977 he scored a total of 22 touchdowns with his passes - that was a league best performance this season. After 14 years and 192 touchdowns scored in the regular season , he ended his career.

Honors

Griese played six times in the Pro Bowl , the season finale game of the best players of the season. He was an all-star twice and was voted MVP in 1971 and 1977 . He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the Florida Sports Hall of Fame, and the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll . In 1977 he received the Bert Bell Award . His shirt number 12 is no longer awarded by the Dolphins.

After the career

Griese is married and has three sons with his first wife who died of cancer. His son Brian Griese was also an American football player in the NFL and now works with him as a television presenter for the US television channel ESPN . Together with his son, Bob Griese wrote a book about his wife's death and his football career, with the focus on the 1972 football season - in which no game was lost.
