‹  Super Bowl XXXVI Super Bowl XXXVIII  ›

The Super Bowl XXXVII was the 37th Super Bowl , the final game of the 2002 season of the National Football League (NFL). It took place on January 26, 2003 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego in front of 67,603 spectators, with the National Football Conference (NFC) champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the American Football Conference (AFC) champions, the Oakland Raiders , at 48 : 21 defeated. For Super Bowl MVP was Dexter Jackson , a safety Buccaneers selected.

prehistory

The Buccaneers had won 12 of their 16 season games and won the championship in the NFC with two safe victories against the San Francisco 49ers (31: 6) and the Philadelphia Eagles (27:10). Tampa Bay stood out for its effective defense , led by reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year , Derrick Brooks , and defensive tackle Warren Sapp . They allowed the opponent only 12.2 points per game (league record), achieved two shutouts and exerted a lot of pressure , especially on the opposing quarterbacks : they achieved an average quarterback rating of only 48.4 and were sunk 43 times .

The Raiders won 11 of their 16 season games and reached the Super Bowl XXXVII after equally sovereign victories against the opponents from the AFC, the New York Jets (30:10) and the Tennessee Titans (41:24). The showpiece of Oakland was the strong offense around the quarterback and reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP), Rich Gannon , who threw 26 touchdowns in the regular season , completed 418 of his 618 passes (league record) and gained 4,689 yards (also league record). The Raiders scored 28.1 points per game (rank 2) and only had three games in the season in which they scored less than 15 points.

Ahead of Super Bowl XXXVII by the media as "Pirate Bowl" (Eng .: was Pirate final ) referred inspired Pirate alluding to the two team names of the Buccaneers ( privateers ) and Raiders ( pirates ). Particular attention was paid to the head coach of the Buccaneers, Jon Gruden . He had trained the Raiders for four years before moving to Tampa Bay in 2003 after internal tensions.

Supporting program and half-time show

Canadian singer Celine Dion sang God Bless America (which was the first and only time sung in a Super Bowl), and the American national anthem was sung by the Dixie Chicks . Shania Twain , No Doubt and Sting performed at the halftime show .

Course of the game

The Buccaneers quarterback Brad Johnson threw an early interception , which quickly moved the Raiders within 30 yards of the end zone . After a failed attack series, Oakland had to be content with a field goal by kicker Sebastian Janikowski (TB-OAK 0: 3) . Soon afterwards Johnson Tampa Bay led to Oakland's 13-yard line, but they didn't bring the football into the end zone either, so that kicker Martin Gramatica kicked a field goal (TB-OAK 3: 3) . The next time the Raiders attacked, the Buccaneers' safety Dexter Jackson intercepted a pass from Gannon, which several moves later resulted in Gramatica's second field goal (TB-OAK 6: 3) . A little later Jackson intercepted another pass from Gannon, and after both teams exchanged punts , the Buccaneers running back Mike Alstott ran the egg for the first touchdown in the end zone (TB-OAK 13: 3) . Shortly before half-time, Johnson threw wide receiver Keenan McCardell , who followed up with a second touchdown from close range (TB-OAK 20: 3) .

The second half started with a long drive from the Buccaneers. After almost eight minutes of possession, Johnson threw Tampa Bay's third touchdown, back to McCardell (TB-OAK 27: 3) . Almost immediately afterwards, another Buccaneers safety, Dwight Smith , intercepted another pass from Gannon and marked a defensive touchdown (TB-OAK 34: 3) . Only then did Gannon come into play and lead an 82-yard drive that wide receiver Jerry Porter completed. Instead of letting Janikowski kick a point after touchdown (PAT), the Raiders attempted a two-point conversion , but Gannon's pass did not make it to the end zone (TB-OAK 34: 9) . After a blocked punt, the Raiders linebacker, Eric Johnson , scored another touchdown, after which a second two-point conversion failed (TB-OAK 34:15) . Tampa Bay brought the football to the opponent's 9-yard line and attempted a field goal, but Gramatica was unable to kick the game due to a failed snap . In return, Gannon threw from 48 yards from wide receiver Jerry Rice in the end zone, who became the first NFL player to score at least one touchdown in four Super Bowls. Again the Raiders chose a two-point conversion, and again it failed (TB-OAK 34:21) . When the Buccaneers had to punt after an unsuccessful attack, the Raiders came to the 29-yard line with three minutes remaining. But then Gannon threw his fourth interception, which Tampa Bay's linebacker Derrick Brooks ran unhindered back into the end zone (TB-OAK 41:21) . In the closing seconds Gannon made his fifth interception, which Dwight Smith completed with a defensive touchdown to the final score of 48:21 .

The Safety of the Buccaneers, Dexter Jackson, was chosen for the Super Bowl MVP . Gannon, the Most Valuable Player of the Regular Season, experienced a historically bad final: he became the first quarterback to throw five interceptions in the Super Bowl. In a single game he suffered almost half as many missed throws as in all of the previous 18 games (11). The Raiders also became the first team in the history of the Super Bowl to score neither a successful point after touchdown (PAT) nor a successful two-point conversion after touchdowns.
