Career highlights and awards

Sebastian Janikowski (born March 2, 1978 in Wałbrzych ) is a former Polish American football player on the position of the kicker . He last played for the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League . Together with Tom Dempsey , Jason Elam and David Akers, he held the record for the longest field goal in NFL history with 63 yards until 2013 . In addition, he played in the U-17 selection of the Polish national football team .

Youth and college

Janikowski spent his youth in Wałbrzych with his single mother and played for the Polish U-17 national football team at the age of 15. When his father, Henryk Janikowski , who lived in Orlando , married an American , his birth mother sent him to Florida to live with him, because she wanted to give her child a better future. Janikowski discovered American football and became a talented kicker for the Seminoles at Florida State University . The "Polish Powderkeg" ( English Polish Powder Keg ), as he was called, twice won the Lou Groza Award for the best kicker in college football , but also caused because of ongoing problems (poor school performance, fights under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of the drug GHB ) for negative headlines. Nevertheless, Janikowski was selected in the NFL Draft 2000 by the Oakland Raiders in the 1st round at position 17. Janikowski was only the fourth kicker in NFL history to be selected in the 1st round.

NFL

Oakland Raiders

At the Raiders, Janikowski immediately established himself as a regular kicker. In his rookie season, he scored 22 field goals and scored 112 points, making him the tenth-best scorer in the league. In 2001, Janikowski increased his hit rate from 68% to 82%, but as in his college days, he was noticed by unprofessional behavior: He was caught once in the red light district of San Francisco , then in spring 2002 he was arrested in a car at excessive speed while under the influence of alcohol. Janikowski scored the best value of 26 field goals in 2002 and played with the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII , which they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 21:48.

In the following two years the Raiders steadily reduced, but Janikowski was rewarded with 22 and 25 field goals with a hit rate of almost 90% and a five-year contract worth 11 million US dollars , making him the highest paid kicker the NFL became. In the years that followed, up to 2007, his hit rate dropped to just over 70%, until he scored 24 out of 30 and 26 out of 29 field goals in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In 2010 he was successful in 33 of 41 attempts: The 33 attempts that were converted meant the best in the league. For this, Janikowski was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time and rewarded with a four-year contract extension for 16 million US dollars, making him the highest-paid NFL kicker to date. In 2013 Janikowski signed a new 4-year contract with the Raiders.

On September 12, 2011 Janikowski shot a field goal from 63 yards , which he set an NFL record. This was broken in 2013 by Matt Prater .

Seattle Seahawks

After separating from the Raiders in February 2018, he signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks on April 13, 2018 , where he beat kicker Jason Myers . In week 12, at the 30:17 win against the Carolina Panthers , he received the award for NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after three successful extra points and field goals including the winning 31-yard field goal .

After 19 years in the NFL, Janikowski announced his retirement on April 28, 2019.

More awards and records

Janikowski, along with Tom Dempsey , Jason Elam and David Akers, held the record for the longest field goal in NFL history (63 yards). In 2007, he narrowly missed the sole record when a 64-yard kick only hit the goal post. With 1799 points (as of November 30, 2017), he is also the best point collector in the history of the Raiders and converted 99.2% of all extra points ( point after touchdown ). For kicks from 50 yards and more, Janikowski has a rate of 52 out of 92 (58.4%, as of September 8, 2016). Janikowski, who signed a five-year contract for $ 11 million in 2004 (then NFL record for kickers) and signed a four-year extension for $ 16 million in 2010 (NFL record for kickers), is one of the highest-paid kickers.

Private life

Janikowski is the only child of Halina and Henryk Janikowski , a former national player of the Polish national football team . In the fall of his career, his father moved to the US North American Soccer League , did not prevail and got a divorce, so that Halina initially returned to Poland with her child. When his father, who remained in the USA, married an American, his son received a residence permit for the USA, which made it possible for him to come to Orlando .
