NFL season
 <2016 2018>

The 2017 NFL season marked the 98th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 7, 2017. The 2017 season ended on February 4, 2018 with the Super Bowl LII at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis , Minnesota .

With the San Diego Chargers , a team relocated to the Los Angeles area for the second year in a row . The Chargers announced their intention to move from San Diego on January 12, 2017. In addition, at the meeting of the NFL club owners, 31 of the 32 team owners agreed to the Oakland Raiders' move to Las Vegas . However, the Raiders will play in Oakland until at least 2019. The Atlanta Falcons played their first season at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium , which was built next to the Georgia Dome site , their former home.

Rule changes

At the meeting of the NFL club owners on March 28, 2017, the following new rules were approved or extended:

  • Skipping the O-Line when shooting a field goal is prohibited.
  • A centralized video replay system was approved.
  • Particularly violent hits against the head are punished with the immediate exclusion of the player.
  • The rule introduced in 2016 that a player should be excluded from play after two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct in a game has been made a permanent rule.
  • The rule introduced in 2016 that the snap starts at the 25-yard line after a touchback has been extended by one year.
  • Players in the backfield will now be penalized for so-called "crackback blocks", even if they are moving after the snap and are less than two yards away from the tackle box.
  • Players who run a pass route, which will in future be regarded as "defenseless players" by the rules, are therefore under additional tackling protection.

In May 2017, the owners decided to change four rules. The overtime was reduced from 15 to 10 minutes and the roster cut was abolished from 90 to 75 players. In addition, it was introduced that each team can now bring two instead of only one player from the Injured Reserve List back into the main squad. The rules for partying after big plays and touchdowns have also been relaxed. Players are now allowed to use the ground (e.g. snow angel) and the ball as a prop for celebrating. Offensive, game-delaying and mocking cheers are still prohibited.

Draft

Myles Garrett was selected as the first player in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft took place in Philadelphia from April 27-29, 2017 in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Since the Cleveland Browns had the worst record in the past 2016 season , they had the right to select the first player in the draft. With the first round pick, they chose the defensive end Myles Garrett from Texas A&M University .

Regular season

The regular season began on September 7, 2017 with the reigning champions New England Patriots playing the Kansas City Chiefs . It comprised 256 games that were played in 17 game weeks, with each team playing 16 games and a game-free week ( Bye Week ) between the fourth and twelfth week. 17 games were played as a Monday Night Game . On the last weekend all games took place on Sunday. There were 17 games on Thursday night starting with the opening game on September 7th and games on Thanksgiving . In the 16 games of the 17th week, all teams met - as usual since 2010 - against an opponent from their division. The game between the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , which was originally supposed to take place in the first week, has been rescheduled to week 11 due to Hurricane Irma .

Games in the NFL International Series

As in previous years, regular season games were held as part of the NFL International Series . For the first time, five games were played outside the United States: two games at Wembley Stadium , two games at Twickenham Stadium and a game by the Oakland Raiders at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City .

Protests against racism

In the preseason of the 2017 season, Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks began not standing during the national anthem after the far-right attack in Charlottesville . In the second week of the preseason, twelve Cleveland Browns players knelt, including the first white with tight end Seth DeValve . On the third day of the regular season, the protest saw new momentum after US President Donald Trump called for the dismissal of all protesting players. The Seahawks, Titans and Steelers players stayed in the dressing room during the anthem and over 200 players, coaches and, for the first time, franchise owners kneeled or folded their arms. Basketball stars like LeBron James also showed solidarity, musicians like Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams knelt before performances.
