The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a large sports stadium in Exposition Park from Los Angeles , which twice as Olympic Stadium served ( 1932 and 1984 ). The traditional sports facility, which can seat up to 77,500 spectators, is also known as The Grand Old Lady . The stadium is since 1923 venue for the NCAA - college football -Mannschaft the University of Southern California , the USC Trojans the Pac-12 , and is the sixth largest football stadium in North America. In addition to the USC football team, the women's lacrosse team and both football teams occasionally use the Coliseum for their games. Since the 2016 season , the Los Angeles Rams , who have returned to Los Angeles, have been playing their home games at the Coliseum again until the new SoFi Stadium is completed.

history

Construction began in December 1921, coinciding with the Rose Bowl Stadium . The Memorial Coliseum opened in May 1923, dedicated to the memory of World War II veterans in the city, and later across the country. The University of Southern California and Pomona College played the first game on October 6th . USC won the game in front of 12,836 spectators with 23: 7 points. It was the site of the track and field competitions of both the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games . Many other events were held here, including the first American football Super Bowl in 1967.

On July 27, 1984, the Coliseum was added to the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a National Historic Landmark .

Prior to the 1993 season, the stadium was renovated for $ 15 million. The playing field was lowered by 11 feet (3.35 meters) and the Olympic track and field facilities were removed so that the spectators could be closer to the action. With 14 new rows of seats, the stadium grew by around 8,000 seats. The stadium was badly damaged in the Northridge earthquake on January 17th in 1994 and had to be repaired for 93 million US dollars.

On March 29, 2008, the baseball friendship game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox set a new record with 115,300 spectators.

On January 29, 2018, it was announced that the stadium would bear the sponsor name United Airlines Memorial Coliseum from August 2019 . The USC Trojans were to receive a total of 69 million US dollars from the airline United Airlines over a contract period of 16 years . It would have been the most valuable name sponsorship deal for a college football stadium to date. The money was to be used for renovation work on the Coliseum at a total cost of $ 270 million. After protests by relatives of war veterans and representatives of Los Angeles County and, as a result, the announcement by United Airlines that it would completely withdraw from sponsorship, the future name United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was decided at the end of June 2019 and the contract was shortened to ten years without precisely quantifying the changed sponsorship amount.

Movie

The stadium was used as a backdrop for the films Two Minutes Warning , Money Talks - Money Doesn't Stink and Escape from LA, and for the television series 24 . The stadium also appears in the television series Columbo in the episode When the Ice Man Comes on. The future of the stadium and its eventual collapse after a fictional disappearance of mankind is dealt with in episode 1 of the second season of the documentary fiction series Future Without People (“Der Zorn Gottes”, USA 2010).
