‹  Super Bowl XXXIV Super Bowl XXXVI  ›

The Super Bowl XXXV was the 35th Super Bowl , the final of the 2000 season of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . It took place on January 28, 2001 at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay , opponents were the champions of the American Football Conference (AFC), the Baltimore Ravens , and the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC), the New York Giants . The Ravens won 34-7, and the Super Bowl MVP was named the Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis .

overview

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was voted Super Bowl MVP .

The Baltimore Ravens won twelve of their 16 season games, one less than their Conference rival, the Tennessee Titans . Therefore, the Maryland team had to go to the AFC wildcard round, where they defeated the Denver Broncos 21-3. Then the Titans were knocked out with 24-10 and then the Oakland Raiders with 16-3. The heart of the Ravens was their tough defense around linebacker and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Ray Lewis, who set two NFL records that are still valid today: fewest counterpoints (165) and the first NFL team with less than 1000 permitted rushing yards for the opponent (965). There were also seven games in which the opponent scored three or fewer points. The Ravens attack was mediocre: running back Jamal Lewis ran for 1,364 yards, but starting quarterback Tony Banks played so poorly ( quarterback rating below 70) that he was replaced by Trent Dilfer in the middle of the season . The Ravens scored only 333 points in the entire regular season , which was 14th in the league.

The New York Giants also won twelve season games and their conference. "Big Blue" first defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 20-10 in the play-offs , and the Minnesota Vikings were beaten 41-0 in the NFC final . Similar to the Ravens, the team was defensively strong and offensively mediocre: the defense around defensive end Michael Strahan only allowed 246 points (fifth best season value), but despite the running backs Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne and a solid quarterback Kerry Collins (22 touchdowns , 13 interceptions ) they achieved only 328 points, which meant they were only 15th in the NFL.

Course of the game

Tiki Barber ran 49 of only 152 yards of space for the New York Giants.

After a start dominated by both lines of defense, Ravens quarterback Trent Dilfer completed a 38-yard throw to wide receiver Brandon Stokley , and after a successful PAT (point-after-touchdown) from kicker Matt Stover it was 7-0 for Baltimore. Even after that, both defensive teams dominated the opposing offensive, so the Ravens only increased to 10-0 with a field goal from Stover . A promising drive from New York was stopped by an interception from Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister shortly before the break. The Giants ended the first half without winning points.

In the second half, New York quarterback Kerry Collins threw another interception on Ravens cornerback Duane Starks , who ran unhindered 47 yards into the end zone . After a successful PAT from Stover, it was 17-0 for Baltimore. But in the following kickoff , Giant Ron Dixon , who was classified as a kick returner, managed a 97-yard touchdown, so that after a correct PAT by Giants kicker Brad Daluiso it was only 17-7 for the Ravens. But right in the next move, Ravens kick returner Jermaine Lewis also managed a kick return touchdown, so that the old distance was restored after another good PAT by Stover ( 24-7 for the Ravens).

The Giants' resistance was broken: they only managed one new first down for the rest of the game. After a touchdown for Ravens running back Jamal Lewis (PAT Stover, 31-7 ), the kickoff Giants kick returner Dixon made a big muff (ie failed catch attempt), so that Baltimore conquered the ball and a few moves later Matt Stover a successful field Goal to the final score of 34-7 shot. For Super Bowl MVP Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was chosen.

In this game, various eternal defensive and negative offensive Super Bowl records were set. The Giants and Ravens together achieved only 393 yards of space and had to punt 21 times . The Giants just recorded 152 yards of space gain, of which running back Tiki Barber alone 49. 15 of the 16 Giants attack series ended without a point, and Giants quarterback Kerry Collins (zero touchdowns, four interceptions) achieved a quarterback rating of a historically low 7.1. The defeat was particularly bitter for Giants offensive guard Glenn Parker , who set the unenviable record of losing a Super Bowl match five times (four times with the Buffalo Bills , once with the New York Giants). However, Baltimore also managed the feat of playing an entire Super Bowl without losing the ball (i.e. without interception or fumble ).
