‹  Super Bowl XLIX Super Bowl LI  ›

The Super Bowl 50 was the 50th Super Bowl of the National Football League (NFL) and the 46th edition of the final of the championship between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL deviated from the usual numbering with Roman numerals for optical reasons .

The game between the NFC champion Carolina Panthers and the AFC champion Denver Broncos was on February 7, 2016 by 15:30 local time (February 8, 00:30 CET ) in Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara held that since the 2014 NFL season is the new home ground for the San Francisco 49ers . The Denver Broncos won the game 24:10. Linebacker Von Miller was voted Super Bowl MVP .

The way to the Super Bowl

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers achieved position 1 in the NFC seeding list with the best regular season in their club's history (15-1). The team of head coach Ron Rivera impressed by its balance, because both the offense (of the Most Valuable Player selected quarterback Cam Newton , running backs Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert , tight end Greg Olsen , offensive linemen Ryan Kalil and Trai Turner ) and in defense ( linebacker Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis , defensive lineman Kawann Short , cornerback Josh Norman ) the team had numerous Pro Bowl players, a total of ten. The Panthers achieved the highest league score of 500 points, defying the injury of their best wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin , who tore his cruciate ligament in the preseason. In the play-offs they moved into the Super Bowl 50 after victories over the Seattle Seahawks (31:24) and the Arizona Cardinals (49:15). For Carolina it was the second participation in the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl XXXVIII was lost to the New England Patriots .

Denver Broncos

The Broncos finished the regular season with a record of 12-4 and took first place on the AFC seeding list. Coach Gary Kubiak's team came up with a strong defense that allowed the opponent an average of 4.4 yards per down and an average of 283.1 yards of space per game (both NFL-wide 1st place) and both with the linebackers ( from Miller , DeMarcus Ware ) as well as the defensive backs (cornerback Chris Harris and Aqib Talib and Safety TJ Ward ) had numerous Pro Bowl players. The weak point was the moderate offense (355 points, NFL-wide 19th place), in which the quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler achieved the league maximum of 23 interceptions. Denver won the AFC after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers (23:16) and the New England Patriots (20:18). For the Broncos it was the eighth Super Bowl participation, and the first since the Super Bowl XLVIII ( 8:43 loss to the Seattle Seahawks).

Match report

1st half

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning led his team to the end zone of the Panthers early on, whereupon kicker Brandon McManus scored the first points of the game with a 34-yard field goal to make Denver 3-0. As the game progressed, each team had to punt once before Cam Newton completed a 24-yard pass to Jerricho Cotchery. However, the referees decided on an "incomplete pass". A few plays later succeeded Broncos- linebacker Von Miller , a sack against Panthers- quarterback Cam Newton , and Newton the Football fumblete and Broncos lineman Malik Jackson picked up the football and in the end zone of the Panthers for the first touchdown made ( Point after touchdown McManus, DEN 10: 0 CAR). In the second quarter Carolina struck back with a long attack series (9 plays, 73 yards), which running back Jonathan Stewart concluded with a 1-yard run into the Broncos end zone (PAT Graham Gano , DEN 10: CAR 7). In the middle of the second quarter, punt returner Jordan Norwood managed a 61-yard return, the longest punt return in Super Bowl history, up to the 14-yard line of the Carolina Panthers. The Broncos could not achieve a touchdown, so it was decided to try a field goal. McManus converted from 33 yards (DEN 13: 7 CAR). The next drive of the Panthers was ended by a fumble from fullback Mike Tolbert , but immediately afterwards Panthers lineman Kony Ealy intercepted a pass from Manning. But since the subsequent attack series failed, both teams exchanged punts until Carolina was around the middle line 11 seconds before the end. On the next move, Newton was sacked by Broncos linebacker DeMarcus Ware . Since the time ran out before the Panthers could start a new play, this ended the first half.

2nd half

Shortly after the restart, Panthers kicker Gano tried a 44-yard field goal, but only hit the right post. Broncos kicker McManus, however, was successful from 30 yards (DEN 16: CAR 7). Newton led his team to the opposing end zone, a pass to Ted Ginn junior was intercepted by Broncos-Safety TJ Ward . The Panthers soon regained the ball when Ealy slapped the ball out of the hand of Broncos quarterback Manning and secured it. This resulted in a 39 yard field goal from Gano (DEN 16: CAR 10). The next three series of attacks each ended with a punt. With four minutes remaining, Miller forced a second fumble from Newton, allowing Ward to take the free ball at the Panthers 4-yard line. A little later, Broncos running back CJ Anderson ran over two yards with the football into the end zone ( Two-Point Conversion Manning to Bennie Fowler , DEN 24: CAR 10). The Carolina Panthers made two more attack streaks, but both missed a new first attempt.
