Career highlights and awards

Demaryius Antwon Thomas (born on 25. December 1987 in Montrose , Georgia , died on 9. December 2021 in Roswell , Georgia) was an American American football poker players on the position of wide receiver . He played college football for Georgia Tech and was selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos , with whom he won Super Bowl 50 . He was elected to five Pro Bowls and most recently played for the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL).

Career

Early years

Thomas attended West Laurens High School , where he also played basketball and athletics in addition to football . As a wide receiver on the football team, he caught 82 passes for 1,243 yards and ten touchdowns as a senior . He was ranked 22nd on Scout.com's list of Georgia's Greatest Talent, and has received scholarship offers from the University of Georgia , Georgia Tech, and Duke University .

He chose Georgia Tech, where he studied management and initially suspended the 2006 season. In 2007 he was used in all 13 games and caught 35 passes for 558 yards. In the next season, a new head coach , Paul Johnson , was hired, who attached great importance to the running game . Thomas initially considered changing universities, but then decided to stay. This season he was the most successful pass recipient of his team with 627 yards and three touchdowns, but was statistically far behind compared to other wide receivers of the Atlantic Coast Conference . His breakthrough came in 2009 when he caught 46 passes for 1,154 yards and eight touchdowns. On January 8, 2010, he announced that he would forego another possible year of college in order to participate in the 2010 NFL Draft .

NFL

Denver Broncos

He was rated by most NFL scouts as the best or second best wide receiver alongside Dez Bryant and selected by the Denver Broncos as the 22nd player in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft . On 31 July 2010 he signed a five-year contract 12,155,000 US dollars . In his first NFL game, he caught eight passes for 97 yards and one touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks . However, he was plagued by injuries over the course of his rookie season, which resulted in him missing five games. So in the end he only got 283 yards and two touchdowns. In February 2010 he tore his Achilles tendon , which put the 2011 season in jeopardy. He recovered surprisingly quickly, however, and became the favorite stopping point of Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow towards the end of the season when he set a franchise record for passes caught and thrown at him in the last seven games of the season . Before the 2012 season, Peyton Manning was signed for the quarterback position, but Thomas missed the preparation by surgery. The new offensive, designed for the passing game, benefited him, and he caught 94 passes for 1,434 yards and ten touchdowns this season. That earned him his first nomination for the Pro Bowl . The 2014 Broncos offensive was one of the best in NFL history, as Manning set records for most touchdowns thrown and most yards thrown. This also benefited Thomas, who caught 92 passes for 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns and was nominated again for the Pro Bowl. The Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII , where they lost to the Seattle Seahawks 8:43. However, Thomas managed to set a record for the most balls caught in a Super Bowl , despite reportedly having a dislocated shoulder for most of the game. On October 5, 2014, he set a new franchise record against the Arizona Cardinals when he caught eight passes for 226 yards. He also managed to gain more than 100 yards of space in seven games in a row by catching passports, which is also a franchise record.

On March 3, 2015, the Broncos used Franchise Day for Thomas in order to have the opportunity to outbid incoming offers for a transfer Thomas' or to receive two first-round picks in the event of a change . On July 15, 2015, Thomas and the Broncos finally agreed on a five-year contract extension for $ 70 million.

Houston Texans

On October 30, 2018, the Broncos announced the move from Thomas to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fourth and a seventh round pick in the upcoming draft next year. A torn Achilles tendon at Week 16 resulted in his placement on the Injured Reserve List first and his release from the Texans on February 12, 2019.

New England Patriots

On April 16, 2019, he signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. He was dismissed before the start of the season as part of the squad reduction to 53 players, but shortly afterwards he was taken under contract again on September 2.

New York Jets

On September 10, 2019, the Patriots swapped Thomas for a six-round pick in the 2021 draft for the New York Jets .

End of career

After not playing in the 2020 season, Thomas announced the end of his career on June 28, 2021.

Private life

In 1999, his mother and grandmother were arrested and given life imprisonment for drug trafficking. He subsequently grew up with his aunt and uncle. In 2015 and 2016, US President Barack Obama's mother and grandmother were pardoned.

He was found dead at his home in Roswell, Georgia on December 9, 2021. It is believed that he died as a result of a traffic accident in 2019.
