The 2010 NFL season marked the 91st season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 9, 2010 and ended on January 2, 2011. The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington , Texas .
Rule changes
- The overtime rule for the postseason has been renewed. In contrast to the Sudden Victory Overtime used up to now , the game continues after a field goal has been scored by the team in possession of the coin after the coin toss. If the opposing team then scores a touchdown , that team is the winner. If the game is still a tie, Sudden Death begins again . During the regular season, however, the old rule still applies, here the game is immediately decided and ended even if the team attacking first has a field goal.
- A play is now whistled immediately if the player wearing the ball loses his helmet.
- The so-called umpire (one of seven referees), who was previously behind the defensive line , is now behind the offensive line .
- During a field goal or extra point, no defender may stand facing the long snapper.
- If the punt returner signals a fair catch , but then drops the ball without any outside influence, he has the opportunity to catch it before it hits the ground.
- If the ball hits the video wall or similar objects, the play is repeated. This rule was introduced as a test in the 2009 season and will become an integral part of the rules from this season.
- If the music box is stopped one minute before the end of a half due to video evidence, the clock will continue to run for ten seconds. It is possible to take a timeout .
Stages
The two teams from New York, the New York Giants and the New York Jets , have played their games in the newly built Meadowlands Stadium since the 2010 season . The new stadium was built right next to the Giants Stadium , the old home of the two teams. The stadium has a capacity of 82,500 and at the time of completion was the second largest stadium in the NFL after FedExField .
The Kansas City Chiefs officially finished renovations at Arrowhead Stadium , which had been going on since 2007. The work primarily concerned infrastructural changes, such as the conversion of players 'and coaches' rooms.
Regular season
The season opening game, the "Kickoff", took place on September 9th in the Louisiana Superdome between defending champions New Orleans Saints and NFC North rivals Minnesota Vikings . Both teams met in the NFC Championship Game last year. The Saints won the game 14-9.
Game in Europe
As in previous years, a regular season game took place as part of the NFL International Series in Europe. In week 8, the Denver Broncos met the San Francisco 49ers at London's Wembley Stadium . The 49ers prevailed with 24:16.
