NFC North

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NFC North is one of four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC). Along with the American Football Conference (AFC), the NFC is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL). NFC and AFC were originally different leagues in competition with one another. These two conferences are divided into four divisions each, geographically according to the four cardinal points.

The Chicago Bears , Minnesota Vikings , Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions play in NFC North . It was founded in 1967 as a Central Division within the Western Conference of the NFL and renamed NFC Central in 1970 after the merger of AFL and NFL . This name was retained until 2002 when the NFL was divided into eight divisions and the current designations were introduced. The Bears, Lions and Packers have been in a joint division since 1933 and the Vikings joined in 1961, the year it was founded. The rivalry between the Packers and the Bears is on, with the Packers joining the NFL in 1921, the longest rivalry in NFL history. Since 1932 , the Packers and the Lions, then known as the Portsmouth Spartans , have played against each other at least twice a season, making the confrontation the longest-running rivalry in the NFL.
