The Valdres Folkemuseum in Fagernes (municipality of Nord-Aurdal , Fylke Innlandet ) is the fourth largest open-air museum in Norway with 100 houses, a medieval grave, tombstones, a coal mine and a coal processing plant and around 25,000 objects . It was founded in 1901 and is located on a peninsula that juts out into the Strandefjorden lake. The larger buildings are at the entrance, the smaller farmhouses on the significantly higher ridge that protrudes into the lake. All houses are originals from the Valdres region that have been transferred to the museum. The oldest house dates from 1350 and is the oldest secular building in Valdres. The museum grounds are used as a farm in summer.

The museum has the oldest folk music archive in the country with 12,000 titles, a study center and a musical instrument workshop. The museum's photo archive contains 75,000 images.

history

The first who had the idea of a museum in Valdres in 1900 was the headmaster of the agricultural school in Oppland , Nils K. Odegaard. The museum was founded in March 1901. The first location was a property bought in 1906. This was sold again in 1917 and the museum acquired the site in Storøya. In the years after 1906, several collectors and antique dealers were able to acquire extensive folklore collections. In 1909 the collection already consisted of 600 individual objects.

The museum belongs to the six municipalities in Valdres and has been operated by Valdresmusea A / S since 2006. It was founded in 2006 and is, among other things, the operational organization of the museums Bautahaugen Collections, Bagn Bygdesamling and Valdres Folkemuseum.

The modern museum building

After several years of discussion, it was decided in autumn 2007 to construct a new building. It houses a large concert hall, a café and a shop. The new building was added to the old one and has 900 m² of usable space with an asymmetrical gable roof. One side is made of glass, the other is overgrown with grass. Other building materials are wood, steel and concrete. It was completed in 2009. The architect is Lund Hagem.
