Matthew Patrick "Matt" LaFleur (born November 14, 1979 in Mount Pleasant , Michigan ) is an American football coach . He has been Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers since the 2019 season , where he succeeded longtime coach Mike McCarthy . As an assistant coach (trainer of the quarterbacks ) he previously worked for the Tennessee Titans , Los Angeles Rams , Atlanta Falcons and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish , among others .

Life

Matt LaFleur was born on November 14, 1979 in Mount Pleasant , Michigan to Kristi and Denny LaFleur. He attended Western Michigan University from 1998-99 , where he played as a wide receiver for the Western Michigan Broncos . The following season he moved to the NCAA Division II and played at Saginaw Valley State University as a quarterback.

He also played in the National Indoor Football League for Omaha Beef (2003) and the Billings Outlaws (2004).

Matt LaFleur is married and has two sons with his wife. His brother Mike works as an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

Career as a coach

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater , Saginaw Valley State. Several stations followed as a trainer for the quarterbacks. In 2012 , he coached Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III with the Washington Redskins, who had just entered the league as rookies . With the Tennessee Titans he was promoted to offensive coordinator under Mike Vrabel .

In 2019 he was finally able to successfully apply as head coach at the Green Bay Packers against ten other applicants . He finished his first preseason with a score of 2: 2. In the first game of the season on September 5, 2019, the Packers managed the opening win against the Chicago Bears under his leadership . As the first Packers coach, he scored more than 10 wins in his first season as head coach. He was also able to lead the Packers into the playoffs and into the NFC Championship Game , in which they were however defeated by the San Francisco 49ers .
