Professional career

Washington Redskins

2012

In the 2012 NFL Draft he was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 4th round at position 102 - a selection that surprised many experts, as the Redskins had already selected quarterback Robert Griffin III with their first pick . Cousins signed his first professional four-year contract on May 31, 2012.

In the second game of the preseason , Cousins threw three touchdown passes to the Chicago Bears in the final quarter . In the final pre-season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Cousins made 15 of 27 passes for a total of 222 yards. He was then appointed second quarterback behind Robert Griffin III.

His first regular season game Cousins made against the Atlanta Falcons in the third quarter after Robert Griffin III was out with a concussion . Cousins threw his first touchdown in the NFL with a 77-yard pass to Santana Moss , and he threw two interceptions .

For his second NFL appearance he came in week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens . In the final quarter, the Redskins were eight points behind when Robert Griffin III sustained a knee injury. Cousins led the Redskins into overtime with a touchdown pass, where they won with a field goal.

The following week, December 15, 2012, Cousins was announced as starting quarterback for the game against the Cleveland Browns , making his first NFL game to begin with. After a subdued first half, Cousins helped the offensive score 28 points in the second half. Cousins finished the day with 26 of 37 passes completed for 329 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Washington Redskins to a 38-21 victory. Cousins was voted Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week that day. In total, he came this season on three missions, in which he threw a total of 466 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions.

2013

On December 11, 2013, Cousins was named starting quarterback for the remainder of the season after Robert Griffin III was spared for the remainder of the season after injuries and poor performance. Cousins threw a total of 854 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions in the following five games.

2014

On February 2, 2014, it was reported that Cousins was considering a move after Robert Griffin III was still scheduled as starting quarterback.

In March, Cousins announced he would be giving his number twelve shirt to his new teammate Andre Roberts for a $ 12,000 donation to Kirk Cousins Football Camp . Since then, Cousins has worn the number 8, which he also wore during his high school and college career.

On the second day of the game Cousins came to a use against the Jacksonville Jaguars after Robert Griffin III had to end the game with an ankle injury. Cousins finished the game with 250 yards, two touchdowns and a 41-10 win. The next week, against the Philadelphia Eagles , Cousins broke the 400-yard mark for the first time with 427 yards of space gained by passing play. However, Washington lost after a close game with 34:37.

On game day five, after an embarrassing performance against the New York Giants the previous week when he threw four interceptions , Cousins made progress against current Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks by throwing two touchdowns and no interception. Despite the solid performance of Cousins, the Redskins lost the game 17:27. After a poor performance in the first half against the Tennessee Titans in the next game, he was benched at halftime in favor of Colt McCoy and did not play a game for the remainder of the season.

2015

On August 31, 2015 it was announced that Cousins would start the season as starting quarterback, replacing Robert Griffin III. On October 25th, Cousins helped his team make the biggest comeback in the club's history. After the Redskins lost 24-0 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at halftime , he played big after halftime and helped the Redskins to a 31:30 win. In this game, Cousins scored a total of 317 yards of space and four touchdowns, three of which were through passes and one through his own run. Cousins also broke the club record of 33 passes received in one game, leveling with Jason Campbell , who did the same in 2007. On the way to the changing room, Cousins shouted “YOU LIKE THAT ?!” into a running camera, which became the catch phrase (catchphrase, motto) of Cousins. Cousins and his brother Kyle then secured the rights to the saying and used it to print t-shirts, the proceeds of which will be donated to the International Justice Mission charity.

On November 15, Cousins threw four touchdowns in the 47:14 win against the New Orleans Saints , which was his career best. He managed a perfect game with a passer rating of 158.3. This makes him the first Redskins quarterback to have done this with at least 20 attempts to pass since 1950. On December 20, against the Buffalo Bills , Cousins threw four touchdowns again and ran another.

The following week against the Philadelphia Eagles, Cousins helped the Redskins to their first NFC East title since 2012 with his four touchdowns .

On January 10, the Redskins played in the wild card round of the play-offs against the Green Bay Packers . Cousins threw a touchdown and made 29 of 46 passes to the man. He was bumped six times , fumbled the ball once and the Redskins lost the game 18:35.

2016

Cousins' agreement was signed by the Redskins on March 3, 2016 via franchise tag extended by one year and included a salary of 20 million US dollars .

During the game of the International Series in the 9th week against the Cincinnati Bengals at Wembley Stadium Kirk Cousins threw the most yards of his career (458 yards), the game ended in a 27:27 draw.

2017

Before the 2017 season , the Redskins and Cousins were again unable to agree on a longer-term contract, and the quarterback was again tagged with the franchise. Cousins is the first player in NFL history to receive Franchise Tag from his team for two consecutive seasons. In 2017, Cousins and the Redskins missed the play-offs for the second time in a row with a 7-9 season record; Cousins finished the year with 347 of 540 passes made for 4,093 yards, 27 touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and four run touchdowns.

Minnesota Vikings

2018

On March 15, 2018, Cousins signed a three-year, guaranteed $ 84 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings . This made him the highest paid player in NFL history after turning down a $ 90 million contract offer from the New York Jets . In his first season with the Vikings, Cousins had good numbers with 4,298 yards, 30 touchdowns with 10 interceptions, 70.1% successful passes and a quarterback rating of 99.7 - similar to those of Tom Brady , who was with the Patriots this season won the Super Bowl - to show, but the Vikings missed the play-offs despite a well-positioned team. In addition to a weak offensive line , Cousins was also criticized for this. Despite his good average numbers, Cousins showed poor performance, especially against stronger teams, and he was said to have poor leadership qualities.

2019

After the Vikings won two games of the first four games of the 2019 season, but also lost against the two division rivals Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears , Cousins was heavily criticized in public, in particular from his wide receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs . After changing the Vikings' play calling to more passing play and more play-action moves, Cousins showed several strong performances. He achieved at least 300 yards of space in the passing game and a quarterback rating of over 135 in three games in a row, which no other NFL player had done before. Cousins led the Vikings as the sixth seeded team into the play-offs, where they were eliminated after a surprising away win over the New Orleans Saints against the San Francisco 49ers . Compared to the previous season, he was able to improve and was one of the best quarterbacks of the season with a quarterback rating of 107.4. Since Aaron Rodgers canceled due to injury, Cousins was subsequently appointed to the Pro Bowl .

2020

On March 16, 2020, Cousins reached an agreement with the Vikings on a two-year contract extension for $ 66 million.
