Daniel "Colt" McCoy (born September 5, 1986 in Hobbs , New Mexico ) is an American American football player on the position of quarterback . He played college football for the University of Texas and will be under contract with the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL) from 2020 . He previously played for the Cleveland Browns , the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins .

Early years

McCoy attended Jim Ned High School in Tuscola , Texas , where he played for the Jim Ned Indians. In addition to his position as quarterback, he also played there as free safety until his father forbade him to play in defense after an injury, and also as a punter .

college

From 2005 to 2009, McCoy played football in college . He attended the University of Texas at Austin , where he played for the Texas Longhorns in the NCAA Division I FBS. He was the only player to date to be elected MVP of the Longhorns in all four years .

NFL

Cleveland Browns (2010-2012)

In the 2010 NFL Draft , McCoy was selected in the third round as the 85th player overall by the Cleveland Browns , where he signed a four-year contract. Although McCoy went into his rookie season as the third quarterback for the Browns behind Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace and should not yet receive a game, he came in the sixth week against the Pittsburgh Steelers used, as the other two quarterbacks were injured. For the rest of the season McCoy played as starting quarterback, where he was out after an injury in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars for three weeks. In total, he played eight games as a starter in the 2010 season , throwing 6 touchdowns at 9 interceptions.

In the 2011 season McCoy went as a starting quarterback. After a concussion in week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers , the season was over for him.

In 2012 he served as a backup for first round pick Brandon Weeden . In total, he ran in 21 games as a starter for the Browns, where he recorded 6 wins and 15 losses. He threw 4,388 yards and 21 touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers (2013)

In 2013, McCoy was traded to the San Francisco 49ers with a six-round pick versus a fifth and a seven-round pick , where he acted as a backup for Colin Kaepernick .

Washington Redskins (2014-2019)

In 2014, McCoy moved to the Washington Redskins , where he was designated as the third quarterback behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins . In the seventh week, McCoy was used in the game against the Tennessee Titans after Griffin was injured and Cousins ​​showed a poor performance in the first half. In his first play McCoy threw the longest touchdown pass of his career with a 70-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garçon and led the Redskins to a 19:17 win. Then McCoy was named as the new starting quarterback, as long as Griffin was injured. After Griffin's recovery, McCoy, who had won both games as a starter, was initially only a backup quarterback, but McCoy replaced him again after Griffin's poor performance. After an injury sustained against the St. Louis Rams , McCoy had to be replaced during the game against the New York Giants .

As of 2015, McCoy served as a backup for Kirk Cousins , who joined the Minnesota Vikings in 2018 , and then for Alex Smith . After this injured himself in the 11th week against the Houston Texans and had to leave the field, McCoy replaced him and threw a touchdown pass on his first play. In the 13th week McCoy broke his leg like Smith before, which ended the season for him.

After starting quarterback Case Keenum and rookie Dwayne Haskins failed to convince in the first four games of the 2019 season , McCoy was named starter for week 5. In his only use of the season, McCoy made 18 of 27 passes for 122 yards to their destination, throwing an interception.

New York Giants (since 2020)

On March 19, 2020, McCoy agreed on a contract with the New York Giants .
