Redshirt (sport)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a redshirt ( english red shirt ) is in US college sports refers to a player who does not participate for one year on active gaming operations in order aufzusparen a year of limited four seasons eligibility. Redshirts may train with the team, but may not take part in any game or competition. The fifth year is usually used to obtain a second bachelor's degree or to switch from undergraduate studies to postgraduate studies . Redshirting in the first year has the advantage that the students get used to their new surroundings, become more familiar with the playbook and can work on their physical condition. Since 2018, football players have been allowed to play up to four games in one season without any restrictions without giving up their red shirt.

Medical redshirt

If a player injures himself during the season and has already participated in the game, he can still be credited with a red shirt year. One speaks of a Medical Redshirt ( English medical Redshirt ). The criteria for being credited for such a year vary from sport to sport. In college football , for example, a player cannot have played more than four games or 30% of the season's games, whichever is greater. If a player has already entered a Redshirt year, he can thus get a sixth year of eligibility to play. These cases are harder to win, however, as the first red shirt year had to be entered due to circumstances beyond personal control.

Greenshirt Yes Yes Yes
Greyshirt No No No
Blueshirt Yes No Yes

Greyshirts are students who spend the first semester as part-time students and thus delay the start of their eligibility to play. With autumn sports such as American football , the start is moved to spring, which is almost like a red shirt, but not a year of the eligibility to play is withdrawn. Greenshirts are similar to greyshirts, but instead of starting one semester later, they start one semester earlier. They are thus allowed to take part in spring training and thus can get used to the new environment earlier. Blueshirts are unrecruited athletes who are placed on scholarships once they arrive on campus, but they count against the following year's scholarship limit as long as they don't play as an unrecruited athlete in the blueshirt year. This avoids over-recruiting.
