Samuel Jacob "Sam" Bradford (born November 8, 1987 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is an American football player serving as quarterback who is currently a free agent . Most recently he played for the Arizona Cardinals in the National Football League (NFL). The 1.93 meter tall Bradford is the first Native American to win the Heisman Trophy . He was awarded the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2010 .
college
Bradford, who is a member of the Cherokee Nation , played both American football and basketball as a teenager , but focused on football after entering the University of Oklahoma . With the local sports team, the Sooners , he immediately became the starting quarterback and thus the first Native American since Sonny Sixkiller to play quarterback in a Division I team. Bradford broke several college records with the Sooners: most complete passes in one game (22), most passing yards in one game (468), most passes without interception (169) and most successful passes (606). In 2008 he won the Heisman Trophy and became the first Native American to win this trophy.
NFL
St. Louis Rams
In the 2010 NFL Draft Bradford was selected by the St. Louis Rams as the first player in the draft and immediately became the new starting quarterback for the Rams. Despite a below-average offensive line that allowed 34 sacks against him (fifth highest league value), he threw 18 touchdowns in 15 interceptions and convinced with a new NFL record for rookies of 354 successful passes. For these achievements, Bradford was named Offensive Rookie of the Year . Oklahoma City honored him on January 13, 2011 with a "Sam Bradford Day".
Expectations were high at the start of his second professional season and initially seemed to be met, as the Rams won all four preparation games. However, numerous injuries at the beginning of the regular season put the Rams in a row. Bradford also had complaints and so they only won 2 out of 16 games.
In the off-season there was always speculation whether St. Louis would sign the current Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III from Baylor University in second place in the 2012 draft. However, the new head coach Jeff Fisher was confident that Bradford would regain his old strength and ultimately swapped the right to vote with the Washington Redskins . This swap gave the Rams the right to vote for the Redskins in the first round of the NFL Drafts 2012 (6th player), 2013 (22nd) and 2014 (2nd), as well as the right to vote in 2012 in the second round (39th). By further exchanges of the rights received in the following years, the Rams got the right to vote, with which the Redskins committed Robert Griffin III, the offensive tackle Greg Robinson , the linebacker Alec Ogletree , the wide receiver Stedman Bailey , the running backs Zac Stacy and Isaiah Pead , defensive tackle Michael Brockers , cornerback Janoris Jenkins and guard Rokevious Watkins .
After the weak pre-season, the Rams were not expected to do much in the run-up to the season. However, the resurgent Bradford was able to convince with a few new rookies and they ended the season with a record of seven wins, eight losses and one draw. Bradford achieved career bests with 3,702 yards thrown, 21 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 82.6.
After the squad was significantly strengthened in the draft and the summer break, the fans had high hopes for a successful season. Apart from Bradford, however, the team disappointed with its inconsistency. In the first seven games he threw passes for 1,687 yards, 14 touchdowns and only four interceptions, before he then tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the game against the Carolina Panthers and the season was thus ended prematurely for him.
Again, Jeff Fisher relied on Bradford in the run-up to the season and saw from other signings on the quarterback position. Bradford was able to participate in the training camp after surviving an injury break and was convincing. After he was spared in the first preparation game, he played again for the first time against the Green Bay Packers in the following week and made a good impression. In the next game against the Cleveland Browns , he injured his knee and was removed from the game. The injury was initially considered minor, but tests eventually led to the sobering diagnosis: another cruciate ligament tear. So the season was over for him before it had even started, and his future with the Rams was considered uncertain due to the long downtime.
Philadelphia Eagles
In exchange for their former quarterback Nick Foles , a fourth-round pick in 2015 and a second-round pick in the 2016 draft, Sam Bradford and a fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft were given to the Philadelphia Eagles . He threw 346 successful passes for 3725 yards for the Eagles and scored 19 touchdowns in 14 interceptions .
Minnesota Vikings
On September 3, 2016, Bradford moved to the Minnesota Vikings for a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and a prospective four-round pick . There he replaced Teddy Bridgewater , who had previously injured himself. In his first season in Minneapolis , to the surprise of many critics, he started with a 5-0 record. In the 2016 season , the Vikings won 8 of 16 games and finished 3rd in NFC North . Bradford threw 395 successful passes for 3,877 yards and scored 20 touchdowns on 5 interceptions.
Arizona Cardinals
Since Bradford's contract was not renewed in Minnesota, he was signed as a free agent by the Arizona Cardinals on March 14, 2018 . At the Cardinals, Bradford did not know how to convince - in three games he only scored 400 passing yards and two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions. From the fourth game of the 2018 season, head coach Steve Wilks decided on first round pick Josh Rosen as starting quarterback and Bradford was sacked on November 3, 2018.
Private life
Bradford is the son of Martha and Kent Bradford, who played college football himself. He is one sixteenth Cherokee through his great grandmother Susie Walkingstick and is officially registered as a member of the Cherokee Nation . He is also a practicing Christian.
