Ewell Doak Walker (born  January 1, 1927 in Dallas , Texas , †  September 27, 1998 in Steamboat Springs , Colorado ) was an American American football player .

He played in college football for the Southern Methodist University team between 1945 and 1949 and received the Maxwell Award during his college career in 1947 and the Heisman Trophy for best player a year later . In the 1949 NFL Draft he was hired by the Detroit Lions , for whom he was active from 1950 to 1955. He was named the NFL Rookie of the Year Award in 1950 and won the National Football League (NFL) championship with the Detroit Lions in 1952 and 1953 . In 1950, 1951, 1953, 1954 and 1955 he took part a total of five times in the Pro Bowl , the NFL's all-star game .

Doak Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986 . His shirt number 37 is no longer used by the Detroit Lions . The Doak Walker Award , which has been presented since 1990 for the best running back in college , is named after him . He was married twice, his second marriage to the skier Gladys Werner , and the father of four children. He died in September 1998 as a result of a skiing accident that he suffered in January of the same year.
