Charles Alvin "Charlie" Sanders (born August 25, 1946 in Richlands , North Carolina , † July 2, 2015 in Royal Oak , Michigan ) was an American American football player . He played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions .
Player career
College career
Charlie Sanders was born in Richlands, at the age of eight he moved with his father after his military service to Greensboro , where he also attended high school . After he was two years old, he was mostly brought up by an aunt because his mother had died. In high school he was active as a football player and basketball player. After moving to the University of Minnesota , he also played basketball and football with the Minnesota Golden Gophers . In 1967 he won the Big Ten Conference with his football team .
Professional career
Charles Sanders was in 1968 by the by Joe Schmidt trained Detroit Lions in the third round to 74th place drafted . In 1970, the Lions managed to move into the play-offs , where they were, however, prematurely eliminated after a 5-0 defeat by the Dallas Cowboys . By the end of his career in 1977, Sanders was no longer able to move into the play-offs with his team.
After the career
Charlie Sanders has served in various roles in the Detroit Lions organization since retiring. From 1983 to 1988 he hosted the Lions games on the club's own radio. From 1989 to 1996 he worked there as an assistant coach. Among other things, he looked after the wide receiver Herman Moore, who was nominated several times for the Pro Bowl . In 1991 he was able to move into the NFC Championship Game with his team , where they lost to the Washington Redskins with 41:10. Sanders died of complications from cancer on July 2, 2015, at the age of 68 in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Honors
Sanders played seven times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the season. He has been elected all-pro six times and is a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, and the Detroit Lions 75th Anniversary All Time Team.
