Roger Wehrli (born November 26, 1947 in New Point , Missouri , USA ) is a former American American football player . He played as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) with the St. Louis Cardinals .

Roger Wehrli was born in New Point but grew up in King City , Missouri. He attended high school there . In addition to American football, he played basketball and was also active as a track and field athlete . In all three sports he has received several awards from his school for his athletic achievements.

Player career

College career

Wehrli studied from 1966 to 1968 at the University of Missouri and played for the "Missouri Tigers' football . He ran on the team's defense and played there as a cornerback. In 1966 and 1967 he was elected to the selection team of the Big Eight Conference . He was also defender of the year in the league in 1968 and was voted All-American in the same year . In 1968 he and his team qualified for the Gator Bowl . Opponent in the game was the University of Arizona , which was beaten 35:10. In all three years of study, Wehrli was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements. His shirt number 23 is no longer given there.

Professional career

Roger Wehrli was drafted in the first round in 1969 by the St. Louis Cardinals in 19th place . Wehrli was already able to assert himself as a starter in his rookie year . In addition to cornerback, Wehrli also played as a punt returner . Wehrli could not win a championship title with the Cardinals. In 1974, 1975 and 1982 he was able to move into the play-offs with his team . In 1974 he managed to intercept a pass from quarterback Fran Tarkenton in the play-off game against the Minnesota Vikings , but the Cardinals still lost 30:14. The Cardinals were also eliminated in the first round in 1975 and 1982. After 193 games with the Cardinals, Wehrli ended his career after the 1982 season.

Wehrli is married and has two children. He now lives as a businessman in St. Charles, Missouri.

Honors

Roger Wehrli was voted seven times for the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. The All-Pro was voted six times . He is a member of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame , the Missouri Football Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the College Football Hall of Fame, and the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team . The Arizona Cardinals honor him at the University of Phoenix Stadium on the Ring of Honor.
