Jackie Larue Smith (born February 23, 1940 in Columbia , Mississippi , USA ) is a retired American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys as a tight end .

youth

Jackie Smith was born in Mississippi but grew up in Kentwood , Louisiana . In high school he first played the clarinet in the school band. It wasn't until late that he decided to take part in a trial session with the high school football team, but was injured and only used as a wide receiver in the last game of his penultimate year . In his senior year at school he played as a tailback , but had to sit out the rest of the season after four games due to a hip injury. Because Smith was also a good athlete , he received a partial athletic scholarship to Northwestern State University . His college wasn't ready to give him a full scholarship until he committed to playing football in college.

Player career

Jackie Smith agreed to Northwestern State University's offer and ran for their football team . He played in the position of a flanker . Smith had noticed a scout of the St. Louis Cardinals during his studies due to his speed , who decided on his recommendation to sign him after his studies. The Cardinals drafted him in 1963 in the tenth round at 129th place and initially wanted to use him as a flanker, but then decided to use him as a tight end. In his rookie year he was able to assert himself in this position due to an injury to a teammate. In the 1971 game round, he suffered a personal setback in his career. Due to a knee injury, he had to suspend the last five games of the season. Although Smith repeatedly attracted attention nationwide because of his achievements, he should only move into the play-offs for the first time with his team after the regular season 1974 . This year the Cardinals could win 10 of 14 games and had to play in the divisional play-off game against the Minnesota Vikings . Smith could not intervene decisively in the game and the Cardinals lost 30:14. The Cardinals were also successful in the following year, winning eleven games with three defeats. Again Smith moved with his team in the play-offs, where however already in the first round a 35:23 loss to the Los Angeles Rams followed.

Before the 1978 season, Smith moved to the Dallas Cowboys. He was used there exclusively for blocking and did not catch a single pass during the regular season. In this game round he was able to win his only championship title. The Cowboys had qualified for the play-offs and faced the Atlanta Falcons in the first play-off game . Smith scored his only touchdown that season in the game. The Cowboys won by 27:20. In the following NFC Championship Game , the Cowboys defeated the Rams 28-0. Winning this championship title also meant moving into the Super Bowl , where they met the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIII . At the score of 21:14 for the Steelers Smith was played by quarterback Roger Staubach in the end zone of the Steelers. He couldn't hold the ball, however, so the cowboys couldn't even out the game. Ultimately, they lost the game with 35:31. Jackie Smith ended his career after that game.

Honors

Jackie Smith played five times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro five times . Jackie Smith is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame , the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame, and the Arizona Cardinals Hall of Fame. The city of St. Louis honors him on the Walk of Fame. The St. Louis Rams honor him in their stadium, the Edward Jones Dome , on the Ring of Fame.
