Daniel Lee "Dan" Dierdorf (born June 29, 1949 in Canton , Ohio ) is a former American American football player . Among other things, he played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the St. Louis Cardinals and is now a sports presenter .

Dan Dierdorf was born in Canton, the son of Evelyn and John Dierdorf. His ancestors came from Germany . He attended high school in his hometown . At the age of 13, the Pro Football Hall of Fame was opened in Canton in the presence of John and Dan Dierdorf . The ceremony impressed him so much that he decided to pursue a career as a professional football player. Dierdorf already played American football in high school. After graduating from high school, he was courted by numerous colleges . He accepted a scholarship from the University of Michigan .

Player career

College career

Daniel Dierdorf was used by the University of Michigan college team in the position of offensive tackle. In 1969 he was able to win the championship in the Big Ten Conference with the Michigan Wolverines . The team was able to repeat winning the title in 1971. In 1970 and 1971 he and his team managed to move into the Rose Bowl . Both games were lost, however. Because of his athletic achievements, he was voted All-American in 1970, played in two selection games in 1970 and in 1971 in the college all-star game. He was also honored from college in 1968, 1969 and 1970.

Professional career

Dierdorf's playful achievements also convinced the NFL scouts . In 1971 he became the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round at 43rd drafted . In his rookie game year he was initially used by the Cardinals on the position of a guard and was responsible for the protection of quarterback Jim Hart . The next few years were not very successful for the Cardinals. It was not until 1974 that the team from St. Louis under the leadership of Head Coach Don Coryell was able to move into the divisional play-offs for the first time , where they failed prematurely at the Minnesota Vikings at 14:30. In the following round, the Cardinals failed again in the play-offs, this time at the Los Angeles Rams with 23:35. In 1982 Dierdorf moved to the position of a center . In the next few years, Dierdorf did not manage to qualify for the play-offs with his team. He ended his career after the 1983 season.

Career as a sports presenter

Dan Dierdorf initially continued to work in the organization of the Cardinals. In 1984 he got a contract with CBS , where he was involved as an analyst on the television broadcast of games from the NFL. In 1987 he moved to ABC , where he broadcast the Monday night football games with Al Michaels , Lynn Swann and Boomer Esiason, among others . In 1987, 1988 and 1989 he was nominated for an Emmy , but could not win the award. He was also involved in the broadcast of Super Bowl XXI , XXII , XXV and XXIX . After the 1998 NFL season, he moved back to CBS and commented on games at the American Football Conference (AFC). Dierdorf is also the co-owner of a radio station and runs a restaurant in St. Louis together with Jim Hart. Dierdorf is married for the second time. He lives in St. Louis with his wife and four children.

Honors

Daniel Dierdorf played six times in the Pro Bowl , the season final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro six times . He is a member of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame , College Football Hall of Fame , Pro Football Hall of Fame , NFL 1970s All-Decade Team , Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Michigan Hall of Fame. The Cardinals honor him on the Arizona Cardinals Ring of Honor. The City of St. Louis honors him on the St. Louis Football Ring of Fame and with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. The city of Springfield has put up a bust of Dierdorf.
