The American Football Conference ( AFC ) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL).

It emerged from the independent American Football League (AFL), which was founded in 1959 as a competition league to the old NFL. Thereupon the fan camps split and, in order to determine the real champion, the two champions competed against each other in January 1967 for the first Super Bowl (not officially called that at the time). After the merger to form the new major NFL in 1970, the conference names practically arose by themselves. Thus, the old NFL became the second conference, the National Football Conference (NFC). In the beginning, 13 former NFL teams played in the NFC, ten AFL teams and three NFL teams played in the AFC.

This is why the NFL is not divided into the Western Conference and Eastern Conference like the NBA or NHL , but in this way. This also gives rise to the situation of the teams that come to both conferences from all over the USA . The New York Giants play in the NFC and the New York Jets in the AFC as well as the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC and the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC.

Teams

16 teams, divided into four divisions , play in both conferences . In contrast to the conferences, the division of the divisions is largely due to the geographical location of the teams. Due to new teams or changes of location, exceptions may also arise here or shifts between the divisions. Both conferences are divided into the East , North , South and West divisions.

The AFC teams:

East North South west
Buffalo Bills Baltimore Ravens Houston Texans Denver Broncos
Miami Dolphins Cincinnati Bengals Indianapolis Colts Kansas City Chiefs
New England Patriots Cleveland Browns Jacksonville Jaguars Las Vegas Raiders
New York Jets Pittsburgh Steelers Tennessee Titans Los Angeles Chargers
