The Houston Texans are a National Football League (NFL) American football team based in Houston , Texas . The Texans play in the Southern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC).

history

The Houston Oilers played in Texas until 1996 before moving to Tennessee . In 1997, the NFL decided to increase the number of teams in the league. Special attention was paid to Los Angeles , as the second largest city in the United States did not have an NFL team. Nevertheless, Houston also applied for the selection process. As expected, the NFL team owners voted for Los Angeles, but set a deadline of six months to clarify open questions (e.g. there was no stadium in Los Angeles). However, this time passed unused, and as a result, the team owners unanimously decided on October 6, 1999 to sell the rights for the thirty-second NFL team for around 700 million US dollars to billionaire Bob McNair in Houston.

In 2000, a new name was therefore sought for the Texan team to be built up. The selection was initially narrowed down to six (Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, Texans, Toros and Wildcatters). It was finally agreed on Texans, to illustrate the special bond with Texas. With their first draft pick in the 2002 NFL Draft , the Texans chose quarterback David Carr , who remained the Texans' starter until 2006. In 2002 , three years after the team was awarded, the Houston Texans hosted their first NFL game at the newly built Reliant Stadium , and for the first time since 1961 a newly formed NFL team won their first game (7:10 p.m. against the Dallas Cowboys ). They still ended the season with only four wins and 12 losses.

After the Texans finished the 2005 season as the worst team with a record of 2:14, they had the right to be the first team to select a player in the 2006 NFL Draft. It was expected that the Texans running back Reggie Bush or quarterback Vince Young would choose defensive end Mario Williams instead . Before the 2007 season, the Texans brought quarterback Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons and sacked Carr. After that, the Texans ended a season with a balanced record (8: 8) for the first time, which was repeated in 2008. In the 2009 season , the Houston Texans were able to win more games than they lost for the first time and just missed their first place in the playoffs (9: 7).

Two years later they qualified for the first time in the club's history by winning the AFC South (10: 6 wins) for the play-offs . Also in 2012 the Texans were able to qualify for the play-offs by winning the AFC South again (12: 4).

In the 2013 season the Texans were much less successful than in the two previous seasons, and in December 2013 head coach Gary Kubiak was dismissed after seven years of service due to a season start with only 2:11 wins and temporarily replaced by defensive coordinator Wade Phillips . With Phillips as interim coach, the Texans finished the season 2:14, losing the last 14 games in a row, the longest losing streak in the club's history. This made the 2013 season, together with the 2005 season (also 2:14), the worst season in the club's history. The next head coach was Bill O'Brien at the beginning of January 2014 .

For the 2016 season , the Texans signed Brock Osweiler from the Denver Broncos for $ 72 million for four years. He was Peyton Manning's back-up quarterback in Denver . The first season with the Texans did not go very well for Osweiler, as he u. a. threw more interceptions than touchdowns (16:15) over the season . In the 16th game week, O'Brien tore the ripcord and promoted Tom Savage to starting quarterback. However, this injured himself in week 17, whereby Osweiler was set again as the starter for the play-offs, which the Texans had reached through a strong defense work.

At the end of the 2016 season, the Texans had 106 wins against 134 defeats from all 240 games in 15 seasons so far from the regular season . The seven play-off games so far resulted in a score of 3: 4.

With their first round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft , the Texans chose quarterback Deshaun Watson , who was only able to play seven games due to an injury. At the end of the 2017 season, after two successful previous years, the team finished last in the AFC South with just 4:12, behind the Indianapolis Colts tied on points . The Texans lost the last six games of the regular season .

The 2018 and 2019 seasons were much more successful: The Texans each won their division (AFC South) and thus qualified for the play-offs. In 2018, however, they failed in the 1st round at the Indianapolis Colts, in 2019 after a dramatic game (31:51 after a 24-0 lead) against the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2nd round.

Play-off story

In the 2011 season , the Houston Texans reached the play-offs for the first time in their club's history . They played their first play-off game on January 7, 2012 at their home Reliant Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals . With a 31:10 victory they reached the divisional play-offs . In this round, however, they failed in Baltimore to the Baltimore Ravens with 13:20.

With a 12: 4 balance they reached the play-offs in the following season , where they met the Cincinnati Bengals again in the wildcard round and won the game 19:13. It managed to running back Arian Foster as the first NFL player in his first three playoff games at least 100 yards to run. In the following play-off game, the Texans failed at the New England Patriots 28:41 and were eliminated, as in the previous year, in the divisional play-offs.

In the 2015 season they were able to win the AFC South with nine wins and seven losses . There they were eliminated from the wildcard round after losing at home to the Kansas City Chiefs 0:30.

In the 2016 season , the AFC South was again won with nine wins and seven defeats. In the wildcard round, the Texans won against the Oakland Raiders 27:14, so they moved into the divisional play-offs. There they played against the New England Patriots in their Gillette Stadium . The game was lost at 16:34, while it was only 13:17 by halftime.

An 11: 5 balance gave the Texans not only a division win in the 2018 season , but also a return to the play-offs. Here it was in the wildcard round against division rivals Indianapolis Colts , against whom there had already been two close games in the regular season (one win, one defeat). The Texans only scored their first points in the fourth quarter, clearly lost 7:21 and were eliminated.

After the 2019 season they lost after a dramatic game (31:51 after 24-0 lead) against the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2nd round.
