Life

Early years

Watson was born on September 14, 1995. He attended Gainesville High School from 2010 . Their head coach Bruce Miller had planned to start an ascending third grader, but Watson won the starting place as a first grader. Deshaun Watson was the first first year quarterback ever to be awarded the starting place by Coach Miller. During his career he set numerous records in Georgia, including total yards (17,134) and touchdowns (218). He also ran for 4,057 yards and 63 touchdowns. Watson had a stellar first season, winning a state championship and earning awards such as Junior All-American , 2014 Player to Watch and 2014 Top 100 Recruit . During his sophomore and third year he was able to lead the Gainesville High School Football Team to the state championship semifinals.

recruitment

Watson received offers from numerous other colleges before choosing Clemson University . Offers he was seriously considering came from the University of Alabama , Auburn University , Florida State University , the University of Georgia , Georgia Institute of Technology , Louisiana State University , Ohio State University , and the University of Oregon and the University of Southern California . Watson verbally promised Clemson on February 1, 2012. He was named the best quarterback of his year by ESPN 300. Since joining Clemson University in 2012, Deshaun Watson has been frequently compared to Clemson's recently retired quarterback Tajh Boyd. Both Watson and Boyd are considered dual-threat quarterbacks and both have strong passing and running play.

college

Freshman year

Watson enrolled with Clemson in January 2014. He stepped into his true freshman season as a backup for starter Cole Stoudt, but still got substantial play. Watson wore the number 4 throughout his high school career. Clemson had not used this number since Steve Fuller left college. However, Fuller did allow Watson to wear the number. After three games, he had made 29 of 41 passes for 479 yards to the man, threw four touchdowns and no interception and thus surpassed Stoudt. Watson was therefore called into the starting line-up on September 21. In Watson's first game to begin with, he played against the North Carolina Tar Heels. He set a new school record with six touchdown passes and threw 435 yards for a 50:35 win.

On October 11, 2014, Watson broke a bone in his right hand in a game against the Louisville Cardinals. He left the game in the first quarter and was also injured in the games against Boston College , Syracuse and Wake Forest . He returned against Georgia Tech but injured his knee and was out the rest of the game. For the next week, Watson had knee pain. He sat out against Georgia State the following week, but came back the next week against inner-state rivals South Carolina . After beating South Carolina, it was revealed that Watson was playing with a torn cruciate ligament .

Watson underwent knee surgery to restore his cruciate ligament before Clemson's bowl game against Oklahoma .

Second year

In 2015, Watson led Clemson to an unbeaten 12-0 regular season and 1st place in the polls. After the regular season, the Clemson Tigers qualified for the ACC Championship Game and faced the number ten seeded North Carolina University . Watson passed for 289 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns, defeated North Carolina at 45:37 and Clemson won the ACC Championship for the first time since 2011. Watson also became an MVP in the ACC Championship Game. Clemson was therefore allowed to participate in the 2016 College Football Play-offs and was seeded as number one. Clemson faced the number four seeded Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl , one of the two CFP semi-finals. Watson threw for 189 yards and a touchdown, ran for 145 yards and a touchdown, leading Clemson to a 37-17 win over the Sooners. Watson was named the 2015 Orange Bowl Offensive MVP. In the final, Clemson faced the number two seeded Alabama Crimson Tide . However, the final was lost at 40:45. Watson passed for 405 yards and four touchdowns and ran for an additional 73 yards. Watson hit the 4,000 passyards mark for the 2015 season in that game, setting the record for most yards in the national championship. With 478 yards (405 pass and 73 run) against the best defense in the nation, he played a good final. In addition to the over 4,000 yards in the passing game , Watson also reached over 1,000 yards in the running game . Watson was the first to achieve this feat in college football history .

For his season accomplishments, Watson was named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 2015 , the first time a Clemson University player was invited to the Heisman Trophy presentation. Watson finished third behind winner Derrick Henry ( Alabama running back ) and Christian McCaffrey ( Stanford running back ). Watson's third place is the best placement in Clemson University's history. Watson won the Davey O'Brien Award, given annually to the best college quarterback. Watson was also named the 2015 ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year.

Third year

Watson was able to lead Clemson to a 37:34 victory on October 29, 2016, scoring 378 yards in a passing game and two touchdowns. Against Syracuse on November 5, 2016, Watson passed 169 yards and scored two touchdowns, but left the game with a shoulder injury. In 2016, Watson was selected as the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was the first to win the Manning Award twice in a row. Again Watson was one of the five candidates for the Heisman Trophy, along with Michigan's Jabrill Peppers , Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook and Louisville's Lamar Jackson . Again he didn't win, Lamar Jackson was awarded the Heisman Trophy. He got almost twice as many votes as Watson. After Clemson defeated Ohio State 31-0 in the college football play-off semifinals (CFP), the Fiesta Bowl , Ohio State , he received the Offensive MVP Award. In the final of the College Football Play-off National Championship Clemson was able to prevail against the number one seeded Alabama Crimson Tide with 35:31. Watson made 36 of 56 passes, 420 yards and three touchdowns against the strongest defense in college football. He threw the decisive pass to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in the last second . He ran for 43 yards and scored a touchdown. He helped the Clemson Tigers to the second national championship in the history of the college and ended a 30-year dry spell. Watson was named the game's MVP.

On November 8, 2016, Watson, along with three other Clemson University players, Wayne Gallman , Artavis Scott and Mike Williams , announced that they would be available for the 2017 NFL Draft . In December 2016, Watson left Clemson after three years with a degree in communications.

NFL

2017

The majority of scouts and analysts expected Watson to be drafted in the first round. He was ranked the best junior quarterback by Sports Illustrated , Pro Football Focus, and ESPN . NFLDraftScout.com named him the second best junior quarterback. The Houston Texans drafted Watson in the first round in 12th place in the NFL Draft 2017. The Houston Texans acquired the draft right from the Cleveland Browns , in exchange Cleveland got Houston's first round draft right in 2017 (25th place) and Houston first round draft right in the NFL Draft 2018. He was the third quarterback to be signed in the 2017 draft, behind Mitchell Trubisky , who joined the Chicago Bears , and Patrick Mahomes , who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs . On May 12, 2017, the Texans and Watson signed a four-year contract under which he can earn a maximum of 13.84 million US dollars and which includes a signing bonus of 8.21 million US dollars.

At the Texans, Watson started the season as a backup for Tom Savage , who had been in the Texans roster since 2014. Nevertheless, Watson made his NFL debut in the first week when the Texans offense with Savage in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars only gained 52 yards of space on 28 plays, which is why Savage was substituted at the beginning of the second half. Under Watson, the Houston attack improved slightly, but the game was clearly lost with 7:29. Watson scored his first touchdown pass in the NFL with a 4-yard pass to DeAndre Hopkins , but he also suffered two ball losses with an interception and a fumble . He took 12 of 23 passes to their destination for 102 yards. Watson was then named starting quarterback for the following game against the Cincinnati Bengals . Watson led the Texans to a 13-9 win on his first start, in which he showed an erratic performance in the passing game. With a 49-yard run, however, he also scored the only touchdown of the game. After a 33:36 defeat at the New England Patriots , Watson was able to convince in week 4 in his first game as a starter at the local NRG Stadium . At 57: 14 drubbing - more points the Texans had hitherto never achieved in a game - over the Tennessee Titans threw Watson four touchdown passes with an interception and erlief a touchdown himself for his performance he was appointed. AFC Offensive Player of the Week award . On the next day, the Texans were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 34:42 in a scoring game , in which Watson threw for five touchdowns and 261 yards. After beating the Cleveland Browns and losing to the Seattle Seahawks , with Houston showing strong offensive performances in both games, Watson was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month and NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for October. In total, he threw sixteen touchdown passes in five interceptions that month. In total, Watson had 1,699 passing yards and 19 touchdowns in the season, throwing more touchdown passes in his first seven games than any other rookie since 1970. On November 2, 2017, Watson tore a cruciate ligament during training and fell for the rest the season. Without Watson, the Texans lost eight of their remaining nine games of the season.

2018

After recovering from injury, Watson made his comeback at the start of the 2018 season against the New England Patriots . Behind an unstable offensive line , Watson showed a mixed performance with a pass rate of almost 50 percent, a touchdown and an interception and the game was lost at 20:27. Initially, Watson could not match his level of the previous season and lost the first three games of the season with his team. Then, however, the team began a long winning streak. As he sustained injuries to his lungs and ribs while defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, Watson had to travel to Jacksonville by bus on Matchday 7 for medical reasons , which took about 12 hours. In the 42-23 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 8, Watson equalized his record for most touchdowns thrown in a game and threw five successful passes into the opposing end zone for the second time in a game. The Texans' record improved from 0-3 to 9-3 before losing a game for the first time against the Indianapolis Colts in week 14. With a 20-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans secured first place in the AFC South on the final day of the game . He achieved a quarterback rating of 104.1 in the regular season , placing him sixth in the NFL. With over 4,165 passing yards and 26 touchdown passes and an additional 551 yards of space gained in the running game and five run touchdowns, Watson was one of the best quarterbacks of the season. He was sacked a total of 62 times , more than any other quarterback in the league.

On January 5, 2019, Watson played with the Texans in the wild card against the Indianapolis Colts in his first play-off game. He brought 29 of 49 passes to their destination and scored a touchdown. Watson threw an interception after not making a single bad pass in six games. The Texans lost 7:21 and were eliminated. As a replacement for Tom Brady , who could not compete because of his Super Bowl participation, Watson was nominated for the first time for the Pro Bowl .

2019

In the 2019 season , Watson led the Texans to 10 wins out of 6 losses and a second consecutive win at AFC South. He finished the season with 3,852 passing yards, 26 touchdown passes, 413 rushing yards, seven run touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 98.0. Watson had a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3 for the first time in his career in the 53:32 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5. Watson was nominated for the second time for the Pro Bowl. The Texans appeared again in the wild card round of the play-offs and met the Buffalo Bills there . Houston initially fell behind with 0:16. From this point on, Watson made 13 of 14 passes, threw a touchdown pass and ran a touchdown himself. The game went with 19:19 in overtime, in which Watson just escaped a sack and with a long pass the decisive field. Goal for a 22:19 win, Watson's first win in a play-off game. In the Divisional Round, Watson was defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs by 31:51 despite 388 passing yards with the Texans in an offensive game .
