University of Alabama law student William G. Little learned to play football at the Andover , Massachusetts school and began teaching University of Alabama football students in early 1892. Later that year the university formed an official team of 19 players, with Little as captain and E. B. Beaumont as head coach. Since then, the Alabama Crimson Tide football division has won 26 SEC titles and 17 national championships. Along with the 17 championships listed by the university, the NCAA names Alabama as champions of the 1945, 1966, 1967 and 1977 seasons. However, these championships are not claimed by the university.

The team also took part in 69 bowls, starting with the Rose Bowl in 1926. Since 1913, 97 players from the Crimson Tide All-Americans were on the first conference team.

The finals of the 2012 season took place on January 9, 2013 in Miami. In the BCS National Championship Game, the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Fighting Irish from Notre Dame 42:14 in an eternal duel. They are the so-called Back to Back National Champions after the LSU Tigers were defeated 21-0 in the final of the 2011 season. By defeating the Clemson Tigers in the final of the 2015 season, Alabama was national champion. The 2017 season also ended the Crimson Tide with a win in the final - a 26:23 after extra time against the Georgia Bulldogs. The team has won five of the last nine college football championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017). The Crimson Tide also reached the final in the 2018 season , again the opponent was Clemson Tigers. Alabama lost the game 16:44 and missed the sixth title.

Men's basketball

The men's basketball program has been overshadowed by the football team for most of its existence. However, the program established itself within several years until it was number one in the national ranking in 2002. The University of Alabama is now a regular contender for the title, both in the Conference and nationally, as it was in the 1980s under coach Wimp Sanderson. Under the current head coach and former point guard Mark Gottfried, the Crimson Tide team improved so much within six consecutive years that it is now one of the NCAA's Elite Eight .

In 2005, the basketball team suffered a minor setback when they lost to underdog Milwaukee in the first round of the playoffs. Milwaukee was led by Bruce Pearl, the current head coach of Tennessee.

baseball

The Crimson Tide baseball team has traditionally been very strong. Alabama has the largest number of SEC titles, along with LSU, for a total of 14 regular season titles.

The Crimson Tide baseball team has been to the NCAA College World Series five times (1950, 1983, 1996, 1997, 1999). Home games are played at the Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
