NFL Draft 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NFL Draft 2017 was the 82nd selection process for new players ( Draft ) in the American Football for the season 2017 of the National Football League (NFL). The draft took place from April 27-29, 2017. For the first time in over 50 years it took place in Philadelphia, in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art , and thus for the first time in the open air.

Teams

AFC East

For the Buffalo Bills this was the first draft under the new coaching staff. The greatest weakness was the defense , which was additionally burdened by the lack of high performers such as Safety Aaron Williams and cornerback Stephon Gilmore . But there was also a need for the wide receivers and the position of the right tackle .

The Miami Dolphins were considered to be well positioned. After they were able to close important gaps in the Free Agency , only the Pass Rush and the position of the Guard were considered to be in urgent need of improvement through the draft.

The New York Jets could only win five games in 2016 . The main cause was the poor performance of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick . After his dismissal and the departure of Geno Smith , the Jets lacked a playmaker. You could sign Josh McCown , but at 37 years of age he could not be a permanent solution. So it was considered likely that the Jets would draft a quarterback. In addition, the Jets with center Nick Mangold , cornerback Darrelle Revis and wide receiver Brandon Marshall had lost three of their five best players for whom they needed appropriate replacements. In addition, there were qualitative problems in the running back , tackle, kicker and safety positions.

The New England Patriots were able after several trades ( english exchange ) until the third round to select their first player. However, the master was not assigned very many weaknesses either. The loss of LeGarrette Blount was seen as the only major problem after the franchise was able to adequately replace the departure of defensive end Chris Long and find a good backup for tight end Rob Gronkowski . Drafting a quarterback to replace Tom Brady in the coming seasons was also considered an option.

AFC North

The Baltimore Ravens had to close several construction sites. In the offense , the offensive line crumbled and the running backs were also considered below average. In defense , reinforcements were needed for the linebackers and the defensive line .

The Cincinnati Bengals had lost two important players on the offensive line in the Free Agency, which is why it was considered likely that they would upgrade there in the draft. Another construction site was pass defense, which made the Bengals defensive backs and edge rushers the focus of the draft.

The Cleveland Browns were voted first for the first time in 17 years. Thanks to an exchange with the Philadelphia Eagles , they were even allowed to choose two players in the first round. This was no longer unusual for the Browns: In the five previous drafts, they were allowed to vote three times in the first round. However, this has not paid off. In the Free Agency before the draft, the Browns had strengthened their offensive line and brought Brock Osweiler as quarterback from the Houston Texans . Still, the Browns needed reinforcements in all positions. The overall first was generally defensive end Myles Garrett , who could have supported the pass rush of the Browns defense, listed at number 31. This assumption was supported by very positive comments by the Browns Defensive Coordinator about Garrett and the little free agency activity of the Browns in this area.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were well positioned with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger , wide receiver Antonio Brown , running back Le'Veon Bell and a functioning offensive line in the offense. In defense, however, there was a need for action. Draft activities were particularly popular with linebackers and defensive backs.

AFC South

For the Indianapolis Colts there was a chance to reinforce the offensive line in the draft. In the previous year, it failed to shine, especially in Pass Protection , and approved the second-most sacks after the Buffalo Bills . The Colts' second line of defense was also considered inadequate and, given the above-average supply of linebackers, there were opportunities for reinforcement.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had been one of the Free Agency's most active teams in previous years, but so far it hadn't paid off. Even in the first year under the new Vice President Tom Coughlin this had not changed. So they strengthened themselves with Safety Barry Church and Defensive End Calais Campbell , among others . The offensive line and the running back positions were added as weaknesses to be remedied by the draft.

The Tennessee Titans had been able to upgrade their squad with good young players thanks to early draft positions in previous seasons. In the Free Agency, thanks to a few commitments, they had been able to eliminate most of the weaknesses and possibly stabilize the squad. The wide receivers remained the only problem child. The Titans were therefore awarded an almost position-independent draft.

The Houston Texans were said to have problems with the quarterbacks and backcourt defense. Given the back draft position, they were given little chance of great success, especially in the quarterbacks. In addition, the Texans needed good linebackers and defensive ends to relieve their regular players.

AFC West

The Denver Broncos were in after their Super Bowl victory 2015 season can not build on the achievements in the following season. The main reason for this was the departure of high performers in defense. If possible, this should be improved during the draft. There should also be activities in the offensive line.

With the Kansas City Chiefs this draft offered the chance to upgrade the running game after the dismissal of Jamaal Charles . The chiefs also needed more depth with the guards. On the other side of the ball, the chiefs lacked reliable linebackers and defensive linemen.

Several problems have been identified with the Los Angeles Chargers . In defense, only the linebackers were awarded constancy. In the offense, the Chargers should lack good wide receivers and a guard post was still considered completely open and should be closed by the draft. Furthermore, a quarterback, who should be built to succeed Philip Rivers , was a possible draft choice.

For the Oakland Raiders there was a need for the running back position after the departure of Latavius Murray . The linebacker position had additional needs that could have been improved in the draft.

NFC East

After the outstanding preseason, two offensive linemen and the entire starting secondary had left the Dallas Cowboys . They urgently needed improvements here. There was also a need for the Pass Rush and tight ends.

The New York Giants have lacked a good left tackle for years. After the offensive linemen of the past drafts could not prove themselves with the Giants in this position, it was considered likely that the Giants would try their luck again here. In addition, they lacked a good running back and tight end. A good backup quarterback for Eli Manning was also needed. On the defensive there were no major construction sites, having worked steadily here in recent years, but better substitutes could be needed in the Front Seven .

After the two starters from the previous season were no longer in the team, the Philadelphia Eagles needed two new cornerbacks. The running backs also lacked a player who could be trusted to run a multitude of runs. There was also a need for pass rushers.

After the Washington Redskins had let go of the entire starting defensive line in the Free Agency, they lacked players in these positions. Two new defensive linemen had already been signed, but one place still had to be filled by the draft. The quality of the linebackers was not ideal either. Ex-General Manager Scott McCloughan had been a friend of the non-position draft - but whether the plan would continue after his dismissal was uncertain.

NFC North

The Chicago Bears had particular problems on the quarterback and defensive back positions. After getting rid of all the quarterbacks from the previous year, they signed Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez in the free agency , but the choice of a quarterback was expected in the middle to late rounds. In the past, the gaps in the defensive backs and especially the cornerbacks were expected to close.

The Detroit Lions needed a better pass rush, so the draft should have focused on the Front Seven . On the offensive, the Lions needed an upgrade among the running backs.

The Green Bay Packers had a relatively stable squad. The main concern was the secondary and the linebackers, who should receive a lot of attention in the draft.

The Minnesota Vikings had after the dismissal of running back Adrian Peterson can get a good replacement with Latavius Murray in free agency, because of its susceptibility to injury and running backs already advanced age, however, the election was still expected a runner in the Draft. The offensive line should also be strengthened. In defense, the Vikings needed a replacement for Captain Munnerlyn and Pass Rusher on the defensive line.

NFC South

The Atlanta Falcons had been one of the strongest teams in the league the preseason and had narrowly missed the title. This was mainly due to the offense. Only a few players could stand out in the defense of the Falcons. That is why it was the main job in the Free Agency. Nevertheless, the Falcons were advised to strengthen the linebackers and the defensive line for the draft.

The Carolina Panthers needed improvements in the running backs, wide receivers, and the offensive line. There was also a need for improvement in the defensive line, but early draft activities were not expected due to the lower urgency.

For the New Orleans Saints , the positions of cornerbacks and pass rushers were considered poorly occupied, which is why reinforcements were expected in the draft. But also a successor to the 38-year-old quarterback Drew Brees was considered a potential draft candidate.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were awarded both adequate running defense and passing play. A need for improvement was seen with the running backs and the defensive backs weakened by departures.

NFC West

The Arizona Cardinals needed fresh blood in the quarterback and wide receiver positions to replace their aging stars. In the offensive line and at the cornerbacks replacements were needed to replace the regular players released into the Free Agency. A new inside linebacker was also needed, as the previous one, Deone Bucannon , had only shown average performances.

The Los Angeles Rams were said to have a need for offensive linemen, wide receivers and cornerbacks. Although Tackle Andrew Whitworth was one of the best players in his position in the Free Agency, he was not considered a long-term solution at the age of 35.

At the San Francisco 49ers , everything was called into question under new head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch . Accordingly, there was a great deal of activity in the Free Agency. So they had already strengthened the wide receiver and the offensive line and were also able to find an interim solution for the quarterbacks. There was still a need for tight ends, running backs and a good tackle was still needed. In defense, there was a need for linebackers and pass rushers. Since the 49ers had already improved their defensive line in the first round in the past two drafts, it was considered unlikely that a defensive lineman would be drafted who is not a pass rush specialist.

The Seattle Seahawks were considered to be well positioned. In the Free Agency they had strengthened their offensive line with Luke Joeckel and Oday Aboushi . However, since this continued to be their greatest weakness, draft selections were again expected there. Otherwise it was expected that the main focus would be on relieving the regular players.

Gambling

Prior to the draft, the Nevada Gaming Authority first allowed betting on the draft. In order to rule out the influence of bets on the draft, only bets that are neither team nor player specific were allowed.

Rule change

From this draft on, the teams are allowed to swap their compensatory picks .
