Kansas State University
The Kansas State University (also K-State called) is a state university in Manhattan in the northeast of the US state of Kansas . It is the oldest state college in Kansas and the second largest after the University of Kansas with 23,182 students enrolled . In addition to the main campus in Manhattan, there is the College of Technology and Aviation in Salina.
history
The university was founded on February 16, 1863 as the Kansas State Agricultural College . It has been based on its current campus in Manhattan since 1875. In 1927 it was renamed to its current name. Chemical engineer Kirk Herman Schulz has been president of the university since 2009.
On June 11, 2008, a tornado devastated several buildings on campus; the damage amounted to more than US $ 20 million.
Richard Myers , former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , has been president of the university since November 2016 .
research
Kansas State's major research areas include atomic, molecular, and optical physics, as well as gravitational studies in cell and developmental biology. One of the most important inventions at the university was the excimer laser .
Sports
The Kansas State University sports team is the Kansas State Wildcats . The university is a member of the Big 12 Conference .
