geography

Manhattan in the middle of the hill country typical of Kansas

Manhattan is 39 ° 11'30 "north latitude and 96 ° 35'30" west longitude. The city extends over an area of 38.9 km², which consists exclusively of land.

Manhattan lies on the northwest bank of the Kansas River , into which the Big Blue River flows east of the city . This is dammed north of the city to Tuttle Creek Lake .

In Manhattan, US Highway 24 meets a number of secondary roads. Interstate 70 , which connects Denver with Kansas City , is 15 km south of the city .

It is 56 miles east on Highway 24 to Topeka , the capital of Kansas. Continue on the same street to Kansas City. It is 793 km west to Denver. Wichita, the largest city of Kansas, is 211 km south; of Omaha , the largest city of the neighboring state of Nebraska , it is 307 km to the north.

history

In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska Act released the area around what is now the city for settlement. In the fall of the same year, George S. Park founded the first Euro-American settlement on the area of the present city and named it Polistra.

The neighboring settlement of Canton was founded a little later.

In March 1855, Free-Staters (opponents of slavery) came from New England under the auspices of the New England Emigrant Aid Company to the Kansas Territory and settled near the two existing settlements. Soon after, the three settlements merged and decided to name the city Boston.

In downtown Manhattan

In June 1855 a steamship with 75 settlers from Ohio , who actually wanted to settle further up, ran aground. They decided to settle here now, but insisted that the new city be named Manhattan . In 1857 the settlement was elevated to a town.

The early settlers occasionally came into conflict with the local Indians , but the conflicts between opponents and advocates of slavery, called Bleeding Kansas , were far more serious . But the army post in nearby Fort Riley protected the city as much as possible.

Early bloom was achieved when gold was found in the Rocky Mountains in 1859 . Gold prospectors drove through Manhattan on their way to Colorado . Since Manhattan was the last city before the march to the Rocky Mountains, the city's traders were able to benefit from the needs of the prospectors.

At the same time, Manhattan developed into an educational center. So in 1858 a local branch of the Methodist Bluemont Central College was established . In 1861, when Kansas joined the Union as a state, a university was founded in Manhattan. In 1863 the Kansas State Agricultural College was established, which is now part of Kansas State University .

In 1866 the Kansas Pacific Railroad ran through Manhattan. Manhattan has seen its population grow steadily since its inception.
