Topeka is the capital of the US state of Kansas and the county seat of Shawnee County .

This current industrial location was previously an important railway location because of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway . To the north of Topeka there are some Indian reservations with casinos.

Topeka achieved particular importance as the starting point of the American Pentecostal movement at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1954, the Monroe Elementary School in Topeka was one of four elementary schools where segregation was challenged. In the landmark judgment of Brown v. Board of Education , the Supreme Court ruled the lifting of this discrimination. The Monroe School was founded in 1992 as Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site named a memorial.

Charles Curtis , the 31st Vice President of the United States , was born in Topeka in 1860 . Three ships of the US Navy were christened in honor of the city of USS Topeka , currently one nuclear submarine bears this name.

For the duration of March 2010, the city renamed itself “Google”. Google retaliated with an April Fool's joke on April 1, 2010, when it announced on the Google Blog that it had renamed itself “Topeka” and replaced the Google logo with “Topeka” on the US Google site. The city also named itself on the days of the appearance of Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! to "To Pikachu ".

history

In the 1840s, after an easy way to cross the Rocky Mountains was discovered with the South Pass , colonization of the Pacific Northwest began on the Oregon Trail . In the area of the later city of Topeka, a regular ferry service was established to cross the Kansas River . However, the first wooden huts were not built until 1854. Topeka was quickly reached by river steamers trading in wood , wheat , meat and potatoes . The city's importance for trade fueled its growth and the creation of important infrastructures .

The resulting Kansas Territory was the scene of bloody clashes between abolitionists and advocates of slavery ( Bleeding Kansas ), until Kansas was accepted into the Union as the 34th state in 1861 . After Topeka was designated the capital, construction of the Kansas State Capitol began in 1866 . A fort was built to protect the city during the American Civil War . The city's development was slowed down by the war and a drought . During this time, however, many new residents - often African-Americans - came to the city.

Lincoln College (now Washburn University ) was founded in 1865 . The railway company Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , founded in 1858, began to connect Topeka with the neighboring cities via railway lines . A real estate boom that began in the 1880s led to the doubling of the population - and ultimately to the ruin of many investors. In the first years of the 20th century, the automotive industry became increasingly important.

The racial segregation in public schools, which was widespread in large parts of the USA, prompted Oliver Brown , who lives in Topeka, to file a lawsuit against the local school authority. The case was eventually heard by the United States Supreme Court ( Brown v. Board of Education ) and led to the repeal of the previous principle of " Separate but equal ".

In the Second World War , founded airbase was in the 1950s to a large base of the Strategic Air Command expanded. After the base was closed in 1976, parts of the facility are now used both civilly and militarily (by the Kansas Air National Guard ).

One place in Topeka has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Sumner Elementary School / Monroe Elementary School , which was the subject of the Brown v. Board of Education were. 64 buildings and sites in the city are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 4, 2018).
