John States Seybold

John States Seybold (born July 2, 1897 in Topeka , Kansas , †  February 28, 1984 ) was an American officer. Between 1952 and 1956 he was governor of the Panama Canal Zone .

Career

Between 1916 and 1920, John Seybold graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point . He then began a long career as an officer in the United States Army . By the time he retired from the military, he had attained the rank of major general. Seybold was initially in the coastal artillery for a short time, but switched to the Army Corps of Engineers in 1920 . In 1922 he also studied civil engineering as an officer at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . Between 1922 and 1925 he was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for the first time. From 1928 to 1933 he taught military science and tactics at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas . He then became the commander of the Engineers District of Vicksburg , Mississippi , which was responsible for controlling the lower reaches of the Mississippi River .

During the Second World War , Seybold was initially head of the procurement office of the Corps of Engineers and then from 1943 procurement officer in North Africa and later in Europe. He was responsible for replenishing the corps. After the war, he took over some command posts in various American states. In 1952 Seybold was appointed as the successor to Francis K. Newcomer as the new governor of the Panama Canal Zone. He held this office until 1956; then he retired. He died on February 28, 1984.
