Walter P. Leber

Walter Philip Leber (born September 12, 1918 in St. Louis , Missouri , † August 3, 2009 in Palm City , Florida ) was a major general in the United States Army and governor of the Panama Canal Zone .

biography

After attending school, he trained as an officer in the United States Army and was first promoted to Second Lieutenant in 1941 . He then entered the service of the Office of the Chief Engineer of the US Army and served as 1942-1946 Secretary of Communications in the area of operations Europe , before then to 1947 employees of the Manhattan Project ( Manhattan Engineer District ) in what is now Oak Ridge National Laboratory was . Subsequently he was first head of the technical department in the Military Liaison Command and then from 1949 to 1950 assistant to the district engineer of the administrative officer in Seattle and Walla Walla . In 1951 he became a member of the general staff of the logistics department of the Army, before he was an engineer with the 8th US Army in Korea as part of the United States Forces Korea between 1956 and 1957 .

In early 1958 he returned to the United States, where he was appointed administrative officer in the office of the chief engineer of the US Army. After that he was lieutenant governor of the Panama Canal Zone between 1961 and 1963 and then a division engineer of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) until 1966 . From 1966 to 1967 he was employed as director of civil engineering for the chief engineer of the US Army.

On February 21, 1971 Brigadier General Leber was appointed governor of the Panama Canal Zone to succeed Robert J. Fleming and shortly thereafter promoted to major general. During his tenure, which lasted until 1971, studies began in 1970 for a further expansion of the canal (Interoceanic Canal) as well as the expansion of the so-called "Gaillard Cut", which was also to mark the end of an important program for safer transit through the canal. He was succeeded as governor on March 3, 1971 by Major General David S. Parker .

After the end of his tenure as governor, he joined the Safeguard missile defense system in Washington, DC
