Safeguard

Safeguard is the name of the American missile defense system that was installed in the 1970s.
This system served mainly to protect the Minuteman - missile silos and - but of secondary importance - the protection of cities during the Cold War against the Soviet nuclear force . Components of the system were a radar with extremely long range and resolution and nuclear-armed missiles to repel approaching missiles. In addition to the long-range Spartan missiles , the so-called short-range sprint missiles (40 km) were also available.
The few completed components of the Safeguard system were shut down again after a short time due to exploding costs and the START II contract.
The Safeguard System is a forerunner of the American efforts in the 1990s to build such a system without nuclear warheads. This led to the termination of the ABM contract .
