Medical officer is a rank of the Bundeswehr . Staff physicians are medical officers with a license to practice as a doctor or dentist . The rank of medical officer is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .

Positions

After completing advanced training (post-university modular training (PumA), including, among other things, operational, leadership and language training), staff physicians are initially employed for two years as assistant physicians in the armed forces hospitals. There the young doctors gain their first clinical experience and acquire specialist knowledge in rescue medicine . Followed by a use as a medical officer in a regional medical device of the armed forces or the use as a surgeon in Marine medical service . During this time, medical officers are also called on for missions abroad , where they are deployed, for example, as assistant doctors in field hospitals or as emergency doctors in mobile medical teams.

Appointment and remuneration

The decisive legal basis for the appointment as medical officer is the Soldier Career Ordinance (SLV) and, in addition, the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. Temporary soldiers , professional soldiers and appointed reservists can be appointed to the rank of medical officer . Prerequisite is the membership of one of the runways for medical officers and the approval as a doctor or dentist . The rank can be achieved at the earliest three years after starting one of the officer's careers in the medical service. Medical officer candidates usually finish their medical or dental studies at a civil university with the rank of lieutenant ( at sea ) and are promoted to medical staff with their license to practice medicine . Employment with the rank of medical officer is also possible with a qualification corresponding to the assignment .

A medical officer is paid A 13 according to the federal salary regulations (BBesO) . Medical officers of this rank receive a higher basic salary than other captains of the same rank .

Uniform wearer area

The rank badge for medical officers is essentially the same as that for captains and lieutenants . Additional career badges in the form of a staff of Aesculapia serve to differentiate between staff physicians . In the career badge for doctors, the snake winds in a double twist , for dentists in a single twist around the staff.

history

With the second copy of the Federal President's order on the rank designations, the appointment and dismissal as well as the uniform of the volunteer soldiers of February 1, 1956, the rank of medical officer was newly created for air force and army officers. Corresponding medical officers of the Navy carried the rank of naval staff doctor, created at the same time . The rank of naval medical officer ceased to exist with the sixth order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of soldiers on May 5, 1966. Since then, corresponding naval uniform wearers have also been in the rank of medical officer.

Others

With regard to the authority to give orders within the meaning of the Superiors Ordinance and Military Disciplinary Regulations , with regard to equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks within the meaning of ZDv A-1420/24 "Ranks and Rank Groups", medical officers are also treated on an equal footing with the captain . When it comes to medical issues, in particular, medical officers are often the superiors of higher-ranking soldiers. In the order of promotion to be regularly followed according to the Soldiers' Career Ordinance and ZDv 20/7, the senior medical officer is the lieutenant and the next senior medical officer .
