history

In 1957, the first military hospitals were set up to provide medical care for soldiers in the newly established Bundeswehr. They only treated soldiers, only in emergencies or on instructions from the Federal Minister of Defense, including civilian patients. The hospitals were divided into three categories (200/400/600) according to the number of beds.

In 1970 the cross- military medical facilities of the Bundeswehr were combined as the Central Medical Services of the Bundeswehr (ZSanDBw). At the same time were hospitals of the Bundeswehr in Bundeswehr hospitals renamed. From 1970 the Bundeswehr hospitals were also available to civilian patients without restrictions. Integrating the Bundeswehr hospitals into the civilian rescue service has proven particularly useful in preparing medical personnel for missions abroad or in crisis situations .

In 1993 four Bundeswehr hospitals were closed. 13 specialist medical centers were established to support the Bundeswehr hospitals .
