The Westerstede Bundeswehr Hospital has existed since June 2008 in a direct structural and medical association with the Ammerlandklinik, the district hospital of the Ammerland district in Westerstede . It is the successor to the Bundeswehr hospital in Bad Zwischenahn , which was operated up to then and which was located directly on the Zwischenahner Meer .
history
The Bundeswehr Hospital Bad Zwischenahn was built from 1952 to 1954 on the site of the former Zwischenahn air base as the British Royal Air Force Hospital Rostrup with a capacity of 150 beds. The RAF handed the hospital over to the German Armed Forces on September 22, 1958. Almost a year later, on June 18, 1959, it started operations as the Bad Zwischenahn military hospital . The bed capacity was increased to 200 units in several steps. On October 1, 1970, the hospital was renamed the Bad Zwischenahn Army Hospital and made accessible to civilian patients.
Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung handed over the keys to the new Bundeswehr hospital in Westerstede on June 30, 2008. This is the first collaboration between two complete hospitals from the civil and military sectors in Germany. The cooperation between the two hospitals, which are part of a building network on one site, is intended to offer patients optimal medical care by using common areas. The old Bundeswehr hospital was closed on June 1, 2008.
On September 3, 2012, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Bundeswehr hospital and the Ammerland Clinic, in which the establishment of the first specialist gynecological examination center for the Bundeswehr medical service was agreed. The specialist examination center in the Bundeswehr hospital will take over the outpatient medical care of the patients, the inpatient care will take place in the Ammerland Clinic.
In September 2013, a contract was signed with the Karl Jaspers Clinic (KJK) to set up a specialist clinic for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy on the premises of the Bundeswehr hospital in Westerstede. This should have a capacity of 40 beds. 30 of these are available for civilian patients, ten are to be used for the treatment of soldiers with post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) . Nationwide, it is the first cooperation of this kind between the Bundeswehr and a psychiatric hospital. The new specialist clinic went into operation on September 1, 2017.
