Ed Neumeister
Ed Neumeister (born September 1, 1952 in Topeka / Kansas ) is an American jazz trombonist and composer.
Live and act
Neumeister played the trombone as a youth in a marching band in Oakland . From 1970 to 1973 he studied trombone with Bob Szabo and composition with Lou Harrison at the University of California in San Jose . After a stay in Amsterdam, he became a student of Mitchell Ross in San Francisco in 1975 . In 1978 he became principal trombonist of the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra . During this time he also performed with his own jazz quartet, called the New Ed Meistero Quartet , which worked with musicians such as Mark Levine , Jerry Granelli , Michael Formanek , Lincoln Goines , Clarence Beckton and Bruce Forman .
In 1980 Neumeister went to New York and became a member of Lionel Hampton's band . After appearances with the Buddy Rich Band , he joined the Mel Lewis Big Band (later Vanguard Jazz Orchestra ) in 1981 , with whom he worked regularly for 18 years. In the same year began his fifteen-year collaboration with the Duke Ellington Orchestra , which was conducted by Ellington's son Mercer . From 1982 to 1984 he also performed with Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band .
Neumeister also led his own quartet and quintet formations. a. Jim McNeely , Kenny Werner , Harold Danko , Marc Copland , Victor Jones , Dennis Irwin , Drew Gress , Jay Anderson , Lincoln Goines , Jamey Haddad , John Riley and Billy Drewes and with whom he made the albums Metro Music and Mohican and the Great Spirit recorded.
In 1988 he founded the New Hat Ensemble , an octet to which u. a. Joe Lovano , Kenny Werner and Don Byron belonged to. To celebrate Duke Ellington's 100th birthday, Neumeister formed a group with Mark Feldman , Billy Drewes , Ron Miles , Marc Copland and Tom Rainey (or Jamey Haddad ), with whom he toured Italy in 1999 and 2000.
Since 1987 Neumeister took composition lessons from Bob Brookmeyer , the musical director of the Mel Lewis Band, and from Manny Albam . His arrangement of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square , which he wrote for the Mel Lewis Band, was nominated for a 1992 Grammy .
In the same year the Klüvers Big Band invited him to a concert tour in Denmark. He became a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz and moved to Vienna. Since 2000 he has also been head of the jazz composition department at the Lucerne School of Music . His cello concerto and the Fantasia for cello and big band were written in Austria and recorded on the Ars label with the soloist Friedrich Kleinhapl and the Jazz Big Band Graz .
