Lincoln Goines (born October 2, 1953 in Oakland ) is an American jazz musician ( electric bass , double bass ).

Live and act

Goines, who grew up with soul and beat music , switched to jazz under the impression of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Miles Davis ' Bitches Brew . He attended high school in Vancouver, where he studied double bass with Sydney Keats, former solo bassist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra ; in addition he took lessons from Eddie Gomez and Gary Karr . Influenced by Steve Swallow , he switched to the electric bass in the mid-1970s.

In 1977 he moved to New York, where he worked for many years in the bands of Dave Valentin and Mike Stern . He also accompanied Sonny Rollins , Dave Grusin , Michael Brecker , Leni Stern , Tânia Maria , Gato Barbieri , Dizzy Gillespie , Eliane Elias , Wayne Krantz , Michel Camilo and Carly Simon and worked as a studio musician. Between 1977 and 2015 he is listed on 152 recordings in the field of jazz.

Goines also works as an educator; he wrote the textbook Funkifying The Clave: Afro-Cuban Grooves for Bass and Drums (Alfred Publishing 1996) with drummer Robby Ameen . Goines has taught at The Collective in New York City since 1986 ; In 2008 he was appointed to the faculty of Berklee College of Music , where he is currently active.
