Leni Stern

Leni Stern (born Magdalena Thora; born April 28, 1952 in Munich ) is a German jazz guitarist , singer and pianist .

Life

She became interested in music from an early age, starting to play the piano at the age of six, and the guitar at eleven. At the age of 17 she founded her own drama group and later worked - still under her birth name - as a television actress, including with Hanns Dieter Hüsch in the ARD series "Goldener Sonntag".

In 1977 she turned more to music and went to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston . There she met her current husband, the guitarist Mike Stern . In 1981 she moved to New York and played as a guitarist in various rock and jazz bands. In 1983 she founded her own band with drummer Paul Motian and guitarist Bill Frisell and in 1985 released her first album under her own name: Clairvoyant .

Her cover version of Laura Nyro's song Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp appeared on the tribute album Time and Love: The Music of Laura Nyro . Since 1997 she has published her albums on her own record label Leni Stern Recordings (LSR), which publishes jazz and music by singer-songwriters . She has received the Gibson Award four times for Best Female Jazz Guitarist .
