Eliane Elias [ eˈli̯an eˈlias ] (born March  19, 1960 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian pianist , singer and composer.

Live and act

She started playing the piano at the age of six: her mother was a classical pianist with a tendency towards jazz. After she started doing transcriptions for jazz pianists at the age of twelve and gave lessons at the music school she attended at the age of 15, she began performing jazz pieces that she composed herself at the age of 17. Her musical role models in jazz were Bud Powell , Art Tatum and Bill Evans . She toured with guitarists Toquinho and Vinícius de Moraes . On a European tour in 1981, it was during a vacation in Paris by Eddie Gomez encouraged to New York to go. After an album with Steps Ahead and one with her then husband Randy Brecker , which was named after their daughter Amanda , she began working as a band leader with her own groups in 1986 . Her debut album Illusions (Denon) was released that year , followed by Cross Currents in 1987. After several successful albums (including a duet with Herbie Hancock ), she began singing on Eliane Elias Plays Jobim in 1989 , which she has been doing successfully since then. Since her first records under her own name, her profile has been made clear by means of completely independent processing of standards. In 1994 she worked on Joe Henderson's Jobim tribute album Double Rainbow: The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim .

She is married to bassist Marc Johnson , with whom she also plays in her own trio.

An album by Bob Brookmeyer with her compositions (Impulsive!), Played by the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra , was nominated for a Grammy in 2001. In 2016 Elias received the Grammy Award in the Latin Jazz Album category for her album Made in Brazil .
