Steps Ahead is an American fusion band founded in 1982 , which initially had the character of a supergroup in the 1980s .

history

The formation, initiated by Mike Mainieri, emerged from the band Steps , which warmed up as a "contemporary bebop band" (Mainieri) in 1979 in the New York nightclub Seventh Avenue South , then performed in Japan and recorded successful albums that initially clearly reflected straight ahead jazz were oriented.

meaning

With the combination of vibraphone, acoustic piano and double bass, the group initially contributed to the relaxation of the relationship between fusion jazz and more conventional jazz ( new acoustic fusion ). The band then developed in the direction of electrically amplified sounds ( synth vibes , electronic wind instruments , e-bass, keyboards) and became significantly more commercial around the remaining core Mainieri and Brecker. Ultimately, Steps Ahead was the most famous fusion band of the 1980s. Since the 1990s she only goes on tour occasionally. In 2008 she played with guest Till Brönner at the Leverkusener Jazz Days .
