Anthony Jackson (* 23. June 1952 in New York City ) is an American electric bass player of jazz , pop and soul .

Anthony Jackson first learned to play the piano before switching to the guitar and finally to the electric bass . He learned the guitar from Pat Martino . His influences include, as he explained in an interview in Bass Player magazine in 1990, the well-known Motown bassist James Jamerson , the Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady and the composer Olivier Messiaen (for his use of the tritone interval).

Career

At the age of 18 he started as a session musician in New York and played in Billy Paul's band . He was best known in 1973 for composing and playing bass for For the love of money , the O'Jays hit while working for the Gamble & Huff record company. Jackson has appeared on numerous records as a sought-after sideman, including a. Michel Camilo , Al Di Meola ( Elegant Gypsy ), Donald Fagen ( The Nightfly ), Roberta Flack ( Feel like making love ), Chaka Khan , Steely Dan ( Gaucho ), Paul Simon (e.g. for The Concert in Central Park ) .
