Donny McCaslin ( Donald Paul McCaslin , born August 11, 1966 in Santa Cruz / California ) is an American jazz saxophonist.

Live and act

McCaslin was introduced to jazz music by his father, who was an English teacher and who led a jazz group as a vibraphonist. He performed with his father's band at the age of twelve, and led his own band in high school. He also played in an eight-member salsa band and studied in Kuumbwa Jazz Center . Paul Contos and Brad Hecht were among his teachers .

He toured Europe and Japan with a youth ensemble and received a 1984 scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music . Here he became a member of Gary Burton's quintet , with whom he toured Europe, Japan, and North and South America for four years.

In 1991 he settled in New York and became a member of the Steps Ahead group , of which he was a member for three years. He also worked with the Gil Evans Orchestra , the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band , the quintet of Danilo Pérez and Mary Ann McSweeney , Maria Schneider's Jazz Orchestra and the Santi Debrianos Panamaniacs .

In 1997 McCaslin founded the experimental group Lan Xan with Dave Binney , Scott Colley and Kenny Wollesen , with which two albums were created. In 1998 he released his first album as a band leader. In 2011 he worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans . In 2013 he gave concerts in Germany with his own quartet.

At the beginning of 2015 McCaslin was involved in the recording of David Bowie's last album Blackstar , together with his band members Mark Guiliana , Tim Lefebvre and Jason Lindner . Expanded by guitarist Nate Wood , the group recorded the album Beyond Now in 2016 , which is inspired by and dedicated to Bowie.
