Ugonna Okegwo (* 15. March 1962 in London ) is a German-Nigerian jazz - bassist .

Okegwo, who has a German mother and a Nigerian father, grew up in Havixbeck , near Munster, and was involved in African-American music in his youth. a. that of Charles Mingus and finally bass playing. In 1986 he moved to Berlin and studied with Jay Oliver and Walter Norris . He gained his first experience with Lou Blackburn , with whom he went on a European tour in his afro jazz band Mombasa . During this time he also worked with Charles Tolliver (with whom he performed at Quasimodo in Berlin in 1988 ), Joe Newman , Oliver Jackson and with Major Holley , who made him move to New York. There he worked from 1989 with Big Nick Nicholas , Junior Cook , and James Spaulding .

In the 1990s he was mainly employed as a session and studio musician and was a member of the trio of Jacky Terrasson and Leon Parker . He has also worked on recordings for Jon Hendricks , John Stetch , Bob Belden , Steve Davis , Sam Newsome , Donny McCaslin and David Berkman . In the 2000s he also worked with Bruce Barth , Tom Harrell , DD Jackson , Luis Perdomo , and in 2013 with Mile DiRubbo . In 2002 he made his debut album Uoniverse , with Sam Newsome, Xavier Davis and Donald Edwards . In the field of jazz he was involved in 93 recording sessions between 1988 and 2013. Currently (2018) he is a member of Joel Frahm's trio .
