Life

Albert Kitzler was born as the third and last son of a farmer and a ship mechanic. Before he was even one year old, the family moved from a village in the Hunsrück to Homberg on the Lower Rhine . The family lived there in very modest circumstances. At the age of ten, he ran away from home for a short time in order to be allowed to go to higher school, which his two older brothers were unable to do because of a lack of financial means. The parents then agreed to enter a secondary school . Kitzler did his Abitur at a grammar school in Rheinkamp .

At the age of 16 years woke reading of Will Durant's The great thinkers of his interest in philosophy .

He has two daughters, lives in Berlin and Munich .

education

Kitzler began studying law at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau in 1974 , and two semesters later he took up philosophy. He dealt intensively with Heidegger at his chair successor Werner Marx . For a year he transcribed texts from Husserl's stenographic estate for the complete edition of his works at the Husserl archive managed by the latter . In 1980, he passed the first state examination in law in Freiburg as the best of his year. He received a doctoral grant from the German National Academic Foundation . With Alexander Hollerbach he did his doctorate in 1984 on the "Interpretation of Anton Friedrich Justus Thibaut ". In the same year he passed his second state examination and began working as a lawyer in a Freiburg law firm.

Activity as a film producer

In 1986/1987, Kitzler undertook a one-year study trip through South America , which had a great influence on his further career. During this trip he decided to pursue his passion for the art of film. In 1988 he therefore went to Berlin. A year later he produced his first feature film , the German-Argentine co-production Hijo del Rio (“The Boy from the River”), directed by Ciro Cappellari. In the following ten years he produced around 20 films that received numerous national and international awards. He achieved the greatest success with the short film Schwarzfahrer by Pepe Danquart , which received over sixty prizes worldwide and was awarded an Oscar in 1994 . Kitzler himself directed three short films under the pseudonym Arvo Blechstein . From 2003 to 2013, Kitzler was a member of the European Film Academy .

Activity as a philosopher

In 2000 he gave up the production activity and devoted himself again increasingly to philosophy. In the following years he conducted intensive studies of practical philosophy in ancient Greece , China and India . In 2010 he founded MASS UND MITTE - School for ancient wisdom in Berlin , a non-profit organization that has made it its business to study and disseminate ancient wisdom through events, philosophical vacations, seminars , matinees , philosophical advice and publications . Since January 2011, the school has been publishing “Words of Wisdom”, quotes from western and eastern antiquity , which Kitzler explains with brief comments, via a free newsletter and social networks .

In 2014, Pattloch Verlag published his first book How do I live a good life? Philosophy for practitioners . There he tries to prove the thesis that ancient wisdom represents one of the greatest cultural treasures of mankind , but that the meaning and practical relevance of this knowledge for the way of life of modern man has largely been forgotten. In 2015 his second book Philosophy to Go was published by the same publisher . Big thoughts for short breaks , a selection of the daily “Words of Wisdom” with an epilogue to the history of this type of wisdom transmission. In 2016 Droemer Verlag published his third book Thinking Heals! Philosophy for a healthy life , in which Kitzler revives the therapeutic philosophy of western and eastern antiquity and shows ways of thinking to avoid, alleviate and cure everyday mental illnesses and thus also physical illnesses. In October 2017 Herder Verlag published "Learn to live - for a lifetime. A practical philosophy", in which Kitzler describes the life teachings of the Roman philosopher Seneca . In May 2019, Droemer followed up with "The happiness of hiking. A philosophical accompaniment to life", in which Kitzler explores the question of what influence hiking has on personal development and a successful life. Wisdom to go was published on April 1, 2020 . Big philosophy for short breaks , a follow-up volume on philosophy to go .
