Alexander Hollerbach

Alexander Hollerbach (born January 23, 1931 in Gaggenau in Baden ) is a German legal scholar with a focus on state church law and legal philosophy .

Life

After graduating from high school, Hollerbach studied law at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau , Heidelberg and Bonn at the old language grammar school in Rastatt . He passed his first state examination in law in Freiburg i. Br. From. In 1957 he did his doctorate under Erik Wolf with a thesis entitled “The legal thought at Schelling. Source studies on his legal and state philosophy ”. Due to his habilitation thesis on "Contracts between State and Church in the Federal Republic of Germany" supervised by Konrad Hesse , Hollerbach was awarded the academic license to teach the subjects of legal philosophy, constitutional and administrative law and church law in 1964 . In 1966, Hollerbach became full professor for public law and legal philosophy at the University of Mannheim , which was then still known as the University of Mannheim , where he devoted himself particularly to questions relating to the reform of the university and university teaching. As the successor to Erik Wolf, he returned to Freiburg i. Br. Back to the seminar for legal philosophy and evangelical church law founded by him. However, in accordance with ecumenical openness, the seminar was renamed “Seminar for Legal Philosophy and Canon Law”. Hollerbach has been retired since 1996.

Hollerbach is the bearer of the Papal Order of Gregory . In 1978 he was appointed a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . From 1984 to 1998 he moderated the Essen Talks on State and Church . Dozens of scientists did their doctorate at Hollerbach, including the Heidelberg law professor Armin von Bogdandy .

On his 70th birthday, his academic students Joachim Bohnert , Christof Gramm , Urs Kindhäuser , Joachim Lege , Alfred Rinken and Gerhard Robbers dedicated a commemorative publication entitled “Constitution - Philosophy - Church”.

In 2003 the Complutense University of Madrid awarded Hollerbach an honorary doctorate . On November 25, 2009 the Theological Faculty of the University of Freiburg also awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2011 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ring of Honor of the Görres Society .
