Armin von Bogdandy

Armin von Bogdandy (born June 5, 1960 in Oberhausen ) is a German legal scholar with a focus on European and international law .

Live and act

He is the son of the industrial manager Ludwig von Bogdandy and the grandson of the chemist Stefan von Bogdándy . After graduating from the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Dinslaken in 1978 , von Bogdandy began studying law in October 1979; in October 1980 a second degree in philosophy . After his first state examination , which he passed in June 1984 at the University of Freiburg , he worked as a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin from November 1984 . There he also passed the examination for the Magister of Philosophy (MA) in June 1987. In April of the following year he completed his dissertation on Hegel's concept of law with Alexander Hollerbach in Freiburg. Von Bogdandy passed his second state examination in July 1989 in Berlin. From November of that year he was again employed as a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin. From January 1993 to December 1995 he was a DFG habilitation fellow . After conducting research at the European University Institute in Florence , he was in July 1996 under the supervision of Albrecht Randelzhofer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Berlin habilitation . The subject of his habilitation thesis is Gubernative Legislation. A redefinition of legislation and the system of government under the Basic Law in the perspective of common European dogmatics .

In August 1997 he received a C4 professorship for public law, in particular European law and international business law, as well as legal philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University . In September 2000 he turned down an offer to become director at the Center for European Legal Policy in Bremen . In February 2001 he was appointed judge at the European Nuclear Energy Court in Paris ; in October 2006 he was elected President of that court. The court has not yet had to meet. In October 2002 he became director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg . In May 2003 he was appointed personal professor at the law faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In February 2005 he was appointed to the Science Council for a period of three years . In July 2008 he was appointed to the scientific advisory board of the European Fundamental Rights Agency.

Von Bogdandy taught at the Hauser Global Law School in New York in the 2005/2006 winter semester and at the Xiamen Academy of International Law in the 2007 summer semester . He is considered one of the most innovative international lawyers of the younger generation. On June 4, 2008, he was awarded the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences prize for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of fundamentals of law and economics. He was named a Senior Emile Noël Fellow at the Global Law School in 2010. For 2014 he was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize .

Before the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers , von Bogdandy reported at the 2002 conference in St. Gallen on the subject of European and national identity: Integration through constitutional law? . At a 2007 conference of the German Society for International Law in Halle , he spoke on the subject of cultural diversity and European community law .
