The steam locomotives of the class P 4.2 of the Grand Ducal Oldenburg State Railways were built on the model of the Prussian P 4.2 , but had minor deviations such as a steam dryer of the Ranafier type and, in three examples, the Lentz type valve control that was widespread in Oldenburg. They were manufactured from 1907. A total of eight machines were procured by 1909. During their affiliation with the state railway, the locomotives were referred to with planet names.

The locomotive "175 Venus " achieved a certain fame when it got stuck on the open Friesenbrücke near Weener on July 25, 1913 and did not crash. The locomotive suffered only insignificant damage, was recovered by the crane ship Viper of the Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven and then used again.

At the Reichsbahn the locomotives were given the numbers 36 1251 to 36 1258.

The tenders used were those of the Prussian types 3 T 12 or 2'2 'T 20.
